Potential cancellation of games - Coronavirus

So start the season later means the players cant have a break otherwise it will head into the re-arranged Euro's.

There is already moaning about the pile up and a winter break. You only have to add 2 weeks onto the beginning of the season and there goes the winter break.

ultimately who knows, there is a huge league restructure happening to the following season due to Qatar WC as well, so there are plenty of option, I personally dont believe voiding a season one of them.

there are two many parties that will seek damages, arbitration etc

But the only clubs that matter in the league will be for carrying on because United might make 4th and Liverpool will win it. The other 18 don’t matter a jot.
It's a majority decision, but I was surprised to see Rodgers call for it being voided. That really seems to be the direction of travel now.

If the wealthy clubs start having a tantrum, this could really be the issue that mark's a decisive turn in how they are viewed. The consensus amongst supporters seems to be the hands off approach from the PL has been disgraceful. That will begin to sink in one feels.

I'm sure some attempts will be made to re start, but I do see them as fraught with difficulty.

As a final aside, if Mendy has the virus, theres every chance some of their players do too. At the very least you are looking at a potential 2 week quarantine as a minimum requirement. Suddenly a sharp re start doesnt seem so sensible.

Brendan’s dopers would be In favour of carrying on too, as would Chelsea

Rodgers has called for the suspension but you could see why they would want to finish the season. Chelsea would probable prefer it to be void as they finished top 4 last season - Spurs will be all for a void as they are struggling.

To be fair nobody can argue them getting the title, and United are currently in a CL spot thanks to the ban so those outcomes can be achieved without actually playing the football by just saying current position stand for europe and title. They'll have to cancel it indefinitely

United would void the season in a heartbeat.

Only Liverpool will kick up a fuss.

Crazy when you think what is at stake. We have allowed sport to become more important than life and death, and that is appauling and disturbing.

I just don’t understand the logic ‘we’ll wait and se if any players get infected then we’ll cancel rather than just cancelling earlier and preventing future spread’. It’s utterly bizarre. Surely a firm decision had to be made that either football can carry on or it can’t and if the decision was that games could be called off at some point then they should have been called off immediately. Instead we’re in this bizarre middle way ‘maybe we can carry on behind closed doors just to get it done so that everyone gets their money’. A truly horrible spectacle.

The plan in Italy atm is to restart Serie A in mid-April if possible, but most likely May.

That obviously depends on the outcome of the virus lockdown over there.

And, if it was a May restart, then that'd only happen if the Euros were postponed.

I saw you were very dependent on this for work and I wish you well buddy. I think going forward there will be lots of sports to make up for this. However Italy is "ahead" of the UK curve on this, and have taken dramatic action. The UK haven't done either of those things. If they are saying Mid April, the UK has no chance of making that deadline, even with dramatic intervention.

I don’t see how they can say current positions. There’s no legal standing for it. Teams at the bottom would say that their competitors didn’t have to play City or Liverpool twice. There’s millions in prize money between each position. We could claim that we might be in Europe at the seasons end but currently are just off the back of playing the top 6. They can’t just go ‘take the standings as they are’. It’s either finish the season, or void it, there’s nothing in between.

Exactly. The longer it goes on the more re-arranging and the bigger the pile up of games. As you say, if the Euro's are pushed back to next summer, then the WC is the following winter - so the season will need to start a bit early or finish late that year.

If you call it now while nothing is mathematically set then there will be lawsuits everywhere, esp the 3 clubs that go down when there is only about 6 points in it. They will lose well over a hundred million. Thats not an option

How would the season being voided and reset affect ffp?
Wages still need paying, no prize money incoming to offset against outgoings,
Players off the wage bill due to contract expiry etc

In reality, if they came to this conclusion, I would guess they would agree something along the lines of all remaining games settled as 0-0 draw or 2-0 home win etc, thus completing the table for the season while effectively locking in on current positions

every restriction is spread over 3 years so shouldnt be a huge issue I think

I know it seems like that, but, to a certain extent, what happens with COVID-19 is out of most people's ( washed or otherwise ) hands, so, sorting out who, if anyone, wins the League is somewhat of a displacement activity - even for the stuffed shirts who run the game in this country.
