Welcome to Barcelonaton FC
It was the spending (loans) they took on... coupled with the massive increase in wages (wage:turnover) that gave them no room to manoeuvre.
Hence O'Neil left.
That £6 million they just spent. That's effectively what they've taken in in player sales - that and any further money will be what they've taken in the rise of TV money this year.
i.e. about another £5million tops.
But still -unless they've suddenly built a 55000 stadium and fill it week in week out - their financial situation's not changed one jot.
But like I've said, this all happened when O'Neil rebuilt a side that finished 16th in the premiership. They spent about/upto £20million each year apart from one season when they spent £45million - problem there was there wasnt a massive income coming in and they gambled on trying to get into the champs league.
BUT - he got them 6th position for 3 seasons after being favourties to get 4th for 2 of them (before tailing off at the end) and a league cup final. O'Neil wanted to push on, saw his key players leaving, wasnt going to get any money to push them on and had enough. You have to break some eggs to make an omelette.
And they havent sold any players yet. Sidwell might be off - but they're already got Kyle Walker on loan, and bought another midifelder.
We have to get rid before we even get LOANS.
