It's one thing to hit a purple patch when there's nothing to play for at the end of the season, and quite another to win those games when it really matters.

Moyes was the master of creeping up the table when no one's looking, and it was pretty much the same in Koeman's first season, too.
That's the most frustrating thing, looking awesome when it makes no difference to us, but the games that we won mattered big time to those we beat, it just proves that talent wise we are very good but mentally it seems is where we are lacking.

But he hasn’t been our main striker the last couple of seasons in reality, has he? He didn’t start up top come the beginning of the season that was what our £27m Turk striker etc. are - main strikers.
He played up front a good chunk of the season we sacked Koeman before Tosun came in.

Tosun showed he was a fraud and DCL took the spot back for most of the season last year barring the 10 or so games we had Richarlison up front.

If we go another year without signing a proper striker because of his "potential" it will kill me inside.

I try to sleep and all I picture are mad bushy eyebrows spaffing shots into the upper Gwladys and I wake up screaming in a cold sweat.

He's not looked a convincing striker yet so why not waste another season trying it on?

To be fair though, when would it really matter? We were never going to win the league or anything, I’m not sure why it would have been any different having that run in January February time because ultimately we’d still only have finished 6th or something. Does that class as mattering?

The thing with DCL is he does help us as a team overall. We are better with him in running the channels and holding the play up and letting those around him have a bit more space. You can't deny that. The proof is there with the back part of the season.

But, and it's a big but, he simply doesn't have that clinical nature that we need given as a team we don't really create chances for our strikers - the chances are created for Richarlison/Gylfi on the whole.

I do think Tosun has that clinical touch but he simply can't keep up with the play in the PL, so we have to go for a player who can bring us that clinical nature without giving up what DCL offers us. It's why Haller would have been a good option imo, as he offers quite a bit similar but does have that finishing touch. That being said, DCL is a fair bit quicker, so we also need to factor pace in.

It's a tricky one. We know we need a forward but they have to be right. We can't just go around saying DCL is crap because he clearly isn't and clearly offers a lot. But if we want to push on we need a player that can do what DCL does well, plus find the net regularly.

Agree for the most part but DCL is bang average when it comes to hold up. Has a poor first touch most of the time.

When he's on it he's excellent. His consistency lets him down there.

But there's other ways to hold up the ball than just have it glued to your feet. His pace and ability to either drop in or turn behind is a form of hold up in itself. Even if he gets the ball pushed wide and runs after it, a defender has to go with him, which opens up space for Richarlison/Gylfi/Bernard to exploit, and the full-backs to overlap.

I'm not Dom's biggest fan, but this idea that he's crap is nonsense. He offers Silva's system a lot. So we need a player who fits that mould that has what Dom doesn't, which is a bit more of an instinct in front of goal and then, as you say, more consistency with his general play.

You're correct there Mr. Toff

To me, the next step is going into the final weeks of the season with at least an outside chance of finishing fourth, which usually means being in touching distance after the December fixture pile-up. I don't really care if its ends with finishing sixth or even lower, as long as the team has a proper go at it.

If there's a repeat of last year's winter form at any point during the season, I think Silva will be gone. I reckon it was only the embarrassment of what happened with Allardyce that spared him from getting the bullet in February.
