They wont be relying on Ampadu and Tomori though as Rudiger, Luiz and Christensen are all PL quality established players, with Azpilicueta also able to play there (which he did a lot under Conte's 3 at the back system). The 2 younger players will be used sparingly or in cup competitions but it will be experience. If Zouma stays then they both may as well go out on loan as they will see practically zero minutes.

I know. That's what I mean.

But based on the press coverage you'd think they're gonna be the new Class of 92. The reality will be completely different.

And also...that academy ain't that great.

Gomes’ smile in his press conference when asked about Zouma makes me wonder if there’s something going on we can’t see.

I'm impressed you managed to read anything into what he said, I was fully away with the 'what a handsome man' daydream the entire segment

Brands doesn't want to overpay, so financial clout really doesn't factor in to it

If it was just a case of us playing money ball then Zouma would already be here

Oh absolutely but I do think there's something to be said for pushing the boat out on players we know work for us and paying the premium for peace of mind and a quick start to the season

See I think financial clout is helping us keep players, we can afford to keep the hands of PSG off Gueye, but buying is different.
The club still needs to be willing to sell to us, and the player needs to be willing to come.
In this case I'm sure Zouma would come, but Chelsea dont need to sell him.
I even wonder if we might try and loan him again.

They're less likely to loan than sell. The fee will help them with FFP, as well as getting his wages off the books. They're looking to sell imo.

Yeah Chelsea don't need to sell him at all, so it will eventually come down to how much he wants to come here and whether we can pay them a fee that makes it worth their while to offload him. They certainly have options in that position if they let him go

I do personally think we'll sign Zouma because it makes sense for all parties, but I have no idea how quickly we'll tie it up. It wouldn't surprise me whatsoever if this dragged on all summer, if only because Brands isn't going to pay what he considers over the odds

I don't sadly. Lampard commented that he only wants players who are committed and see Chelsea as their club - so this likely to come down to whether Zouma wants to come here. I am not that convinced. Very different situation to Gomes who wanted out, whereas Zouma has consistently said throughout the past few years out on loans how much he wants to make it at Chelsea and I think he would be ahead of Christensen. Therefore with Rudiger injured he starts the season alongside Luiz and has the chance to stake his claim for the place long-term. I think that is a chance he will take rather than come back here with potentially less chance of starting due to competing with Mina for the place.

Not sure about that mate, I think he knows he will certainly be ahead of Mina to partner Keane, the only time Mina got in ahead of him was when he couldn't play against Chelsea.

Can confirm that I used to see all of Chelsea’s youth teams play fairly regularly due to work and I always walked away thinking. “They didn’t look as good as I expected”.
