I was a big fan of Martinez. That first season of his was magic. Fudge all that crap about it was Moyes's players and his setup. He got us to two semi's more than anyone else has done since. He should have been given a couple of more seasons to use the money we were getting. No doubt I’ll get replies saying he would have bought crap, would have relegated us etc etc.. He got the semi's of the World Cup FFS. "YEAH BUT HE HAD WORLD CLASS PLAYERS" Exactly my point.
There's a small and belligerent group of refuseniks on here who hanker for the old hard line Stalinist days of Comrade Hoofball Moyes, and curse the Glasnost brought in during the Martinez era.

Fk Moyes mate. Shows you what a quality manager he was when he left us. When he came in he was a breath of fresh air, granted, but it slowly became plucky little Everton.

From about 2009 onward he became the board's attack dog on fans groups seeking better club governance. He willingly presided over a fire sale of players and bided his time for the call to come from SAF for the (no doubt) long promised United job...and when he got it he took his kecks down and shat all over this club.

I despise the man.

Agree wholeheartedly mate. The whole "Sir Alex called me up, I thought he was calling to TAKE one of my players" Despicable. Loathe the fool.

Funnily enough I agree with some of the views expressed regarding Moyes....he outstayed his welcome from about 2009 and Billy Liar and the rest of the board were quite happy to keep him on. Can't forgive him for his attitude towards us when he went to Manure, and he's done FA since. Unfortunately boys pen Bill went and compounded his mistake by hiring Martinez after he had taken Wigan down. Suggest that if a political allusion is needed, then you will remember the wall coming down, which in this case was our defence, and the capitalist oligarchs took over thereafter. Most Blues I know hated Martinez's last two seasons and were made up when he was rightly dispatched

I hate this way of looking at it. We were in real danger off going down when Moyes took over, and we could easily have gone down over the next few seasons if he hadn’t been there. There’s nothing to suggest we wouldn’t have stayed down too. Trophies are obviously great but the club Moyes was managing was not a club that had the resources of clout to be expected to win trophies.
I'm no Moyes hater, at times the football was decent and he could spot a player in the main. However well he did to consolidate us when we were dire doesn't change the fact that over 11 years with the players he did bring in opportunities were squandered. Being braver and going for teams might've won us a cup, no doubt in my mind his conservative nature was a hindrance in cup competitions.

You need to be bold and gamble in a big cup game: Wor Davie is a timid wee beast. Case in point: Drenthe left out of the squad for the Cup SF versus Liverpool. A goal up and then throwing Drenthe on 2nd half to turn them on their heels a bit more often instead of enduring wave after wave of their attacks could have won the day for us. Unfortunatley, Wor Davie's cautious Presbyterianism couldn;t allow a misdemeanour to be placed one side for the good of the club as a whole. He needed to assert his Puritanism and be seen to be in control.

The utter 'kin walloper.

Van der Meyde on his time at Moyes' Everton:

"There were only two players who could play football, the rest were just running and kicking the ball. It's unbelievable."

THAT was the scenario Martinez walked into and tried to change for the better.

Never let it be forgotten that chasing after the pat on the head for finsihing 'best of the rest' off the media for our hoofball this club had strayed far away from playing football.

That's poor, Dave, relying on a waster like him to support your argument. You can do better than that.

Now that's more like it! ;)

Cracking couple these two made that day.

Better to try and play football the right way and finish mid-table a couple of times than finish top half by belting the ball from your own half to the opposition 18 yard box as your tired 11 year old tactic.
Call me old fashioned but I think part of playing the right way involves defending and not passing around the back for 45 minutes.

Defending is beoing disciplined. That rabble have proven under manager after manager they arem't capable of it. And they were rubbish defending set pieces under Moyes too.
