Winning last night has really helped. It's now looking unlikely that we'll get dragged into a scrap, therefore, like Allardyce, he has the rest of the season to prove he can get the team to play progressive football. If he does, great, and we can plan for next season. However, I am hoping that Moshiri and Brands have talked, and Brands is scouting for a new manager that we can get in the summer if necessary.

He got criticism for losing games so he deserves credit for digging out wins when we’re not playing well. All this ‘it was only Huddersfield’ stuff is disingenuous as the greatest team in football history Liverpool had about one shot up there. An away win in the prem is a good result however it comes about. We’ve wanted a manager to be more flexible and Silva showed that last night. The players are mentally weak and have zero confidence. That could be a big result for Silva. If he can steer the good ship Everton to 7th place and European football then he buys time to continue to rebuild.

Dom, am I right in thinking that, under new UEFA rules for the competition, if the 7th placed English team takes an EL spot they will go straight to the group stage and no mucking about with qualifying rounds in July?

Asking absolutely the wrong man mate but would be a welcome change if this was right. Tbh the europa qualifiers never bother me. They’re a competitive pre season which if we had a competent squad and manager should not even concern us. It’s only because we’ve had a few tragic league campaigns under Martinez and Koeman that the europa league has become a dirty word as if it was to blame.

People seem to forget this. Also the fact that he cleared up an absolute mess of a side he’d inherited from Martinez.

It went wrong when he went out and signed 75 players for the same position, sold Lukaku and everybody got a tad confused.
He should never have gone for Rooney, but I feel that was Kenwright pushing for it.

Far too many cooks in the kitchen during that summer.

Koeman was bang average in that first season. Did well to get points on the board early but we were pretty dreadful in a lot of games. Didn't expect him to crash so badly but he was never going to do much better than average. Utter waste of time and has set us back a couple of seasons at least.

Silva, whilst not being the best we could have gotten and although having a crap season, still has the potential to do more for me if it works out. And I prefer the potential to achieve more, with the higher risk of it going wrong, rather than the guarantees of averageness of the last two jokers.

Even if Silva doesn't work out I hope we have seen the last of hiring cautious percentage football managers like the last two and Moyes.

Take gambles like the one with Silva and aim for more.....hopefully with the safety net of Brands recruiting players under a genuine consistent strategy where the managers hired have to fit into it.
