And all their fans have gone very quiet. Been saying for 18 months that jags was done and Baines for a year.

But was still getting told in the summer jags is still our best defender and Baines is good fir another season.

Last season, Jagielka was our best defender. It was a sad reflection on just how bad we were that that was the case. I, along with many others, stated that he should be at tops fourth choice this season, and that has proved the case (he's probably 5th choice).

I don't recall anyone debating the fact that Baines needed replacing. But most sensible people stated there was no need to sell him to do so (as again has proved the case). Baines is here as a more than able back-up to a very good left-back in Digne.

Interesting that the rumoured primadonas (Jags and Baines) aren’t in the team that is playing so well and winning.

why is it interesting?

They have both been replaced by younger players, in Baines case by a player who has played for PSG, Roma and Barca so is a class act. The other by a player who was good enough to be on the bench for France recently too.

Who has actually rumoured them to be anything other than model pro's? except one or two cranks on here!

I'm a fan of both but you were hardly alone were you? Jagielka's 36, do you think it's some sort of amazing insight to suggest that he's done for?! I stand by saying that he was our best defender last season, but that doesn't mean I couldn't see he was well past it. Just being better than the other shower he was competing with was hardly an achievement, but he still was, so I would say anybody who was telling you that in the summer was right. Thankfully we've now brought in new defenders, who are unsurprisingly better than him, and with a bit of luck will be better than he ever was. Same with Baines, he probably would have been alright for another year, but I was very pleased to see that we decided to be proactive and replace him anyway, like all well run clubs should.
Funny how Keane now looks like a top class player, now he’s no longer alongside Jags or Williams

Have you ever played football mate? serious question.

The side last season was dreary, devoid of ideas and confidence and lacking direction.

He is now surrounded by better players and has had to up his game.

How is this Jags or Williams fault? Why has there always got be a an evil villain? In Jags case, one who has served the club marvelously and his only crime is getting older!

Hi mate.
I and other fans are still here. But we are winning games and the defence is looking good. Why would we lobby for their inclusion when they're replacements are doing so well?
Or is this just a ""I told you so"? Because I imagine a dip into the vaults will show you get as many right as you do wrong, just like every football fan.
You’re right we all have different opinions on players. This is different though. As every Everton fan will agree jags and Baines were top class international footballers at their peak.

Unfortunately for the last couple of seasons both have dropped off a cliff, but the Sentimentality fans can’t accept their favourites are finished.

Like the embarrassing Jag was our best defender shouts. Last season we were a car crash at the back. So being the best of an awful bunch is nothing to be proud of

I wouldn't say he looks remotely top class, but it's not funny at all really. Anyone with a vague understanding of football could have told you that playing next to someone with pace and power would help him, it's really not rocket science and was mentioned thousands of times on here last season. It's the same reason that we often looked better with Holgate playing last year. Despite him not actually being particularly good in his own right, he offered something that the defence was otherwise lacking, and so made the unit better.

Also helps that we can keep the ball for a bit nowadays. Last season seemed like it was exclusively played in and around our penalty area. No wonder defenders were making mistakes due to the amount of time to create opportunities we were giving up.

So you are admitting Jags was the best defender last year then? So they would be correct?

I personally disagree, it was Holgate for me but opinions and that.

Right, so out of Jags, Keane, Williams, Holgate, Martina, Baines, Coleman, Kenny, Funes Mori - who was our most consistent defender last season?

I'd have said Holgate had he had more of a run in the side, but after Christmas he pretty much didn't play, then had an injury.

I don't think I read many people saying Baines was good for another season as first choice or Jags was our best defender, I do recall that the defence was shocking last year so out of Keane, Martina, Williams and Funes Mori he was the most consistent.

A replacement for Baines is what I recall the majority were asking for. He is good for a season as cover and that's why he's still with us.

Two great servants for the club. Not on the scrap heap yet but part of a squad Silva wants.
