..I read he ended up being a fork-lift truck driver in the Midlands and is now 66. He was useless but we all remember the character.

Remember that brilliant diving header he scored against West Ham? Bobby Moore marking him as well. Bernie then threw up on the halfway line.
He also won a few bets off the other players by doing his party trick (one of them) of doing keepie-uppies from one end of the pitch to the other.
He was indeed a chess champion and was all set to challenge Bobby Fischer for the World Title, but Fischer didn't turn up, and then we bought him from Walsall after he'd lumbered around Goodison in a cup tie a few days earlier.
