Standards. That's my concern. "Managed" may or may not be "massage down high expectations" or Brands et al will shoulder the responsibility of achieving expectations.
I took it to mean it'll take some time to meet those expectations and the requires some managing in the short term. Seemed pretty obvious to me.

The Toffees new director of football insists he is in for the long haul at Goodison Park and warns that money alone won’t guarantee success.

Brands helped new manager Marco Silva land six new signings this summer with the arrivals of Richarlison, Yerry Mina, Bernard, Andre Gomes, Kurt Zouma and Lucas Digne for a total close to £90m.

But the Dutchman, who replaced Steve Walsh this summer, does not believe spending big will necessarily bring glory at a club that has had five different managers in five years.

He said: “When I spoke with him (Moshiri) before I came in, I told him that if you want success next year don’t look for me because I cannot bring that."

“You saw in the past in the Premier League that if you only spend money, that is not the guarantee for success.

“You see the clubs with the long-term strategy. They are in a stable situation. Look at Tottenham, look at Manchester City.

“I think that it is important for Everton to get to a stable situation. With all the changes, it is always difficult for everyone.”

Brands’ focus since he arrived at the start of June was getting transfer business done.

New Everton director of football Marcel Brands insists he is not here for a quick fix
Wayne Rooney, Joel Robles, Ramiro Funes Mori and Davy Klaassen have all moved on while Ashley Williams and Luke Garbutt have been sent out on loan.

Nikola Vlasic is set to head to CSKA Moscow while Muhamed Besic and Cuco Martina are also expected to leave before the European transfer windows close at the end of the month.

But Brands, who left PSV Eindhoven for Everton, is now starting to focus on the Toffees’ young guns to help bring through new talent as well as scouring the market.

He said: “First my focus was only on the transfer window, to make a good squad for the new season. But from September 1, I will be focusing on the youth."

“I saw the last two games of the Under-23s at Chelsea and in Manchester. That is also an important thing. I will go down to the young ages, the Under-16s and Under-15s also.

“We have a lot of work to do at this fantastic club.”

Silva and Brands may be looking long-term but there will still be pressure to deliver improvement on last season’s eighth-place finish in the Premier League under Sam Allardyce.

Brands said: “I think we have improved the squad. That was the goal. We have balanced it more. We have got it at a better average age - all positive things."

Brazilian winger Richarlison was brought into the club for £40m
“The negative thing is that it happened quite late. Normally in pre-season, you have to prepare your squad that starts now. So I hope we will not lose to many points in this period.

“If we can have a good start, we can have a very good season. We will see at the end. We have improved the squad and that was the goal.

“Marco is very happy with the squad. We have changed the way of playing and, ok, that also takes some time. You saw that with the results in pre-season. But the players like the way they play now.

“At the end, I think not the best players will win the league but the best team.

“I am not saying that we can win the league but if we can make a good team from this squad, we can have a very good season.”
Seems to have a coherent plan to develop the club. I said when he joined it could take up to 3 windows to address the mess he inherited, but you can’t help but be impressed what he has done on the transfer front and the strategy he has to take the club forward.

First we are going to Barcelona and saying ok we would like Digne and then also we say Mina is a footballer that we like and ok, maybe we don't get Gomes in the first or the second visit but then we ask ask ask and ok then finally we have the players that we like

Poor Dave, muttering to himself about chinese loans, sell to buy, while Marcel goes over to Barca with a bag of money and comes back with ALL the players.
Yeah, and then starts philosophising about stability and spending not being the answer.

I think he's a bit contradictory in these interviews, tbh.

Steve Walsh went to Italy and came back with his suitcase.

Brands goes to Spain and comes back with a buy 2, get 1 free offer.

Build the statue.

I see Marco got on the phone, muttered a few sweet nothings and all of a sudden Gomes' clothes are all over our floor.
