Christchurch is also a beautiful city on the mend although perhaps not ideal with young children given the odd shocks here and there

Yes my kids are a little nervy about earthquakes etc so we had ruled out Christchurch as they were/are nervy and that’s the big earthquake my 10 year old knows about.

@harris78 ...what industry are you in?
Suggestions made in this thread of Hawkes Bay...(Napier or Havelock North) you should consider...and Wellington. Nelson as well (top of South Island)

The business is in the travel industry, predominantly dealing with the Mega Yachts, arranging crew for said ships and also a little in the oil and gas industry. We have a few homeworkers dotted about NZ already who will stay as they are. Once I get out there we will look to recruit from one area with staff being based in the office mostly but with the option of being flexible to work from home when needed.

Best of luck with your move. It sounds like a fantastic opportunity. My older brother and his girlfriend are both junior doctors and when they've both finished their two year training they're looking and moving to NZ. A much better quality of living over there and work life balance instead of the problems over here for doctors!

You'll be able to give Usmanov's new mega yacht, named Big Dunk a special welcome when it rocks up in a few years.

Kids should find employment easy enough, plenty if opportunities to be hobbits and dwarves done there so I hear.

Sounds an exciting opportunity. The only other country on the planet if like to live after the UK. Good luck pal.

I lived in Christchurch... but you've ruled that out, all the volcano's that a quake could potentially set off are up north where you're talking about.
If I was to choose a place on the South Island I'd head to Nelson & around Abel Tasman, but Christchurch is ideally situated for Alps, Coast & everything.

There's a UK torrent of immigrants coming to NZ...with no exaggeration, 60-70% of people I contract are recent (i.e.last 5 years) arrivals from UK...are things really bad over there? I always enjoy my trips 'back home'

My younger brother was in that game...based in South of France. He's in finance in London now, but the mega yacht business set him up for life

Haha its funny how the mega yachts owners etc throw their money about like its nothing until it comes to crew and travel. All of a sudden they become tight ar@es!! Defo got a few more years having to work before i can retire off of these billionaires

To be honest we never had any desire to move but the company offered me the position so we thought why not...id rather do it and come back home in two years rather than ten years down the line wonder what if. Life is for taking chances etc so we thought we would give it a go.

What line of work are you in mate?

We deal with the Dilbar, unfortunately only through the purser and not Usmanov himself! I would have a few questions for him if i could get to him

Just concluded a business sale of a portfolio of hospitality sites scattered about the North Island (freehold and operating leases)..most were sold as freehold going concerns but some had to be split between prop co and op co and sold separately...it was a bit of a pain tbh...herding cats. I stepped in to help a mate out and it was a more convoluted process than I really had in mind when I said ok. Got a few thorny tax issues to sort out but broken its back.
Now I can relax and get happily depressed just watching Everton lol

just by the by...if you are in that industry, Auckland is where you'll be best located...Tauranga? maybe...Northland would be better than New Plymouth or palmerston

The bad stuff.

It is expensive. Cost of living is higher than it was when I lived in Hawaii. Housing costs in and around the major metropolitan centers is getting really silly. Crapboxes going for huge money.
Gangs. NZ is home to the highest number of gang members per capita than any other country in the world.
Crazy racism. Both to pacific Islanders and people of non-european descent.

The good stuff.
It is very pretty. Very, very pretty.
Lots of good people out here.

Like all places, if you are willing to work hard, it will return the favour and you will enjoy yourself. If you come with a 'not sure' or negative mindset, you probably won't enjoy your time here.

It wouldn't surprise me if a few are folk that are returning there either, folk who like ourselves have resident visas (& return) that allow us to if we wished.
If everyone with a NZ passport or right to stay there went back to NZ then it'd sink. The Govt used to do quite well out of immigration, from all of the initial visa fees, then for 3 years you could only put in to the system, a lot used to get the passport/visa & then not stay, the govt weren't really bothered as there was a queue of folk to take their place & willing to pay to be there.
