Ronald Koeman discussion

It is probably to RK’s advantage and luck that the next few games are again a mix of League/EL/LC.

Personally it makes no difference to me but I just get the impression that another 2 or 3 League games straight without a win would be more damaging to him than even a scenario of an “expected loss” vs. Chelsea in the LC and effective elimination from the EL by losing/drawing against Lyon.

With this board, he can buy time by picking up a win/draw every so often in the league, after all, it’s not a million miles between that and doing slightly better that seems to be the gold standard.

Win enough home league games and he is ok, so can’t afford too many more Burnleys for comfort.

Even without all this, if we had been doing slightly better, our away form for me would have been cause for serious concern alone - we just don’t win away nor look like being able or willing to, full stop. So interesting to see what Saturday brings. But I have developed a sense of apathy with us for away games in particular. I want us to win away, but don’t “expect” it, Moshiri would be pleased to learn.

That, friends, is a very far cry from a club with serious ambition.

IMO, things are as bad and as stagnant now as in the last few weeks of Martinez, I am waiting for inevitable change to recharge my EFC enthusiasm batteries, and it looks like the players are, too.

I don’t say that lightly, as it’s once again sobering and serious for us, not to mention utterly depressing, but this is my humble judgement as an active fan of 35 years.

Looks like we may remain a museum for the foreseeable.

Do you expect to see signs of improvement?

..more hope than expect. I thought there were a few signs in the home game against Split but those have been extinguished since. I think of RK at Southampton where each season they would go through a really bad spell followed by a really good spell but his body language suggests he’s currently at a loss.

I still think we’ve got decent players but he doesn’t seem to have a team strategy or formation to accommodate them. The signs are not good but I live in hope more than expectation.

Unless Koeman actually plays some width and pace (which means some of his signings being dropped) just can't see us picking anything up. Will he continue stubbornly until he's sacked or be pro active and change the shape etc?

The points we have got this season in the league, we have been very fortunate as it is, Stoke at home scrapped that, Man City away good fighting performance but hung on against 10 men, Bournemouth home if Defoe had scored when clean through at 1 - 0 up who were awful by the way, we would be more desperate than we are today.

Things are bad, like someone mentions earlier unless we play players in correct positions and drop some of his buys we will struggle

It would be a bitter pill for him to swallow to have to start dropping his expensive purchases but if he wants to keep his job he is going to have to. I don’t think he will though, I see him as too stubborn to admit his errors. His blaming of the players for the situation doesn’t suggest he is a man who will admit fault and change.

...he might stumble on a solution but I think he needs to pick a formation and then put players into it that best fit. Square pegs in square holes. Also, ‘buddy’ players who compliment each other so we get effective partnerships and blend.

Koeman doesn’t seem to be the type who’ll roll up his sleeve with a steely determination to turn things around. I might be wrong, but it looks like he distances himself from his players and the team looks isolated and leaderless. I sincerely hope he can get back to winning ways but the signs are not good.
