Ronald Koeman discussion

The interview didn't bother me, but one nagging thing in my mind is that he mentioned more than once that we have strengthened the number 10 role significantly in buying Rooney, Siggi and Klassen. So the question remains whose decision was it to buy three players for one position!

He'll likely use Rooney as the striker more often than not.

Agreed. I don't know if you can put bets on finishing 7th but we will i'm fairly sure. Only way we'll get higher is if one of them has a catastrophic downfall. Not impossible with Arsenal at the moment, but they always seem to find a way to hit an ok bit of form.
But the teams below us, i'm not really seeing any of them improve enough to catch us.

We're literally in our own little league where we finish top....and bottom of it.

As for Koeman. He must be livid right now.

From speaking to a few people who know their stuff, only Rooney and Keane were his choices for players this summer. I'd guess Martina was too due to their history.
So the others, including Klaassen are Walsh picks.

I find that worrying. Even though I like all the players we got in. We clearly are still short.

Ah well January isn't THAT far off. Is it?!

In a way, and even if the mix of players in attack does seem a bit off, I would prefer that he isn't picking them all. As I'm not much of a fan of his, I was quite happy we went down the director of football route as it should mean a short-term coach, as Koeman is seen to be, couldn't mess up a squad long term just to achieve his own self-serving short term goals.

However that goes out the window if the DOF ain't all that. Very early days to be judging squad recruitment overall for a new DOF though. If in a couple seasons time, regardless of the manager, some of these signings are first names on the team sheet and others were sold but only for good money then the system is working.

I just don't see us improving on 7th TB.

I honestly think we are going to be dull as dishwater to watch, but for some reason think he will grind out results to get to at least the semis of the Europa. Would be great to be within just a couple of games from a knockout tie for a champions league group place.

It's going to be very frustrating watching Williams, Jags and Baines struggle in some of the crap games we are likely to have and know they've had 3 transfer windows and still ended up with that.

Let's see how we look though when the squads 10 games into the league season. Maybe they'll surprise us.

I can see Spurs and Arsenal struggling compared to last season - Arsenal are in a bit of turmoil and will have sulking players and Spurs have their Wembley voodoo.

Maybe not enough to finish ahead of them, but I can see us being closer

There's no way we buy in January. We're £45m in the red - Barkley and Niasse clearly had to go to balance the books.

Yeah, I can see it too.....but not enough to pip them. They key is in looking at the attacking options of the three teams.

If he gets us above then it will be by defensive tactics and keeping it very tight and squeezing out wins.

Will be watching those two with interest though. Hope it gets worse at Arsenal and Spurs continue to struggle at 'home'

Yeah the big difference is that 'main' striker. We have 2 players in Rooney and Thor who I'm confident can get at least 10 league goals each this season hopefully with klaassen and Sandro chipping in as they settle.

Can see a few narrow 1-0 wins this season

Because he was told we had enough money to buy another cb and striker. And he was told that Ross would go.
There's plenty of excuses if you want to find them. He was hanging out for Giroud and didn't seem to have another plan. He could have signed Llortente several weeks ago. He was the one who told us that Barkley would go. He could have signed a centre half as well, there was money there if he wanted to spend it there, rather than another midfielder. Not great team building in my opinion.

Koeman brought in some verry good playerswho are better then what we had. He was told that we would get another striker and cb. Some people really don't realise how bad our team was and on top of that we lost our best player(lukaku). How much did we actually spend if you consider we sold lukaku and stones for 140 mil??? we've been told that we could spend 150mil plus the lukaku and stones money but i guess it was all a lie.

To compete with top 6 we need at least another 5-6 new players. It will take years te be on that level because we can't attract worldclass players. All the teams above us can. The only way to do it is developing young players between 19-23 with some experienced players like rooney to help them. The only thing they need is time because playing with 3 or 4 guys around 19 is gonna cost you points. I don't think there's any team in the last 10 years that finished in the top 6 with so many young players.

I'm all for Koeman's no nonsense approach, but surely he has to tread carefully, we now have 3 unhappy players in the squad who are either already frozen out (Niasse) or are definitely going to be frozen out this season (Barkley and Mirallas) In any working situation unhappy employees can really cause problems for the rest of the team.

Also, can't wait for his next press conference when the first question he gets asked is 'so Ronald, you wanted a defender and a striker, what happened?'
