The difference in class is so depressingly huge, we got rich at the wrong time. Chelsea and City nailed it.

But an awful lot of Chelsea's best performers weren't superstars when they joined

Courtois - £9m from Genk
Azpilicueta - £7m from Marseille
Cahill - £7m from Bolton
Moses - £10m from Wigan

Even some of the more expensive 'punts' they've made (Hazard, Alonso, Willian) hadn't achieved much in their careers at the time

Maybe it's more than just money - Maybe our scouting network and tactical acumen of our assorted managers over the years is to blame
