Poor first half apart from the moment of magic for Rooneys goal
Second half we were much better but slacked off a little at the end giving Shakira that space to shoot (should have closed him down) but Pickford saved us from embarrassment.
Good result all things considered

ratings

Pickford (9) Solid. What a save.

Martina (4) play Coleman now. He'll be fine.

Keane (9) Excellent display. We'd be in trouble without him. Alarming.

Jagielka (3) first half display was one of the worst I've seen in a blue shirt. Rated him a 2 but throwing himself at the foot of Chipo-Moting gained him a point.

Baines (5) very much past his best. Didn't do anything of note.

Gana (7) Energy. Tackles. Was everywhere. Sloppy at times.

Schniederlin (4) Very poor today. Flat footed. I don't know what's happened in pre-season but he seems to have zero confidence.

Klaassen (4) Looked lost in a decent league. Yard off the pace. Empty shirt for me.

Calvert Lewin (4) Did absolutely nothing of note until we changed it up. Even then his decision making resembles Barkley. Could of squared it to Rooney to secure the game. He's basically in the side because he's about 6' 2 tall. Mind boggling.

Ramirez (5) showed some good touches but couldn't get going due to shocking service.

Rooney (8) vision. Experience. Goal on his proper debut. MOTM because of the goal

Others
Williams (5)
Davies (5)
Mirallas (5)

Didn't do much of note. 5 being average.

In short. We play like that for the next 5/6 games coming up.... We'll be out of Europe and will get tanked against City, Utd etc....

We have the three points which is most important. We need those going into these next few games. On that showing I'm concerned.

Unconvincing.

Stoke were poor, Everton not much better.

This is where Lukaku got us the points last season in games like this: gave us that cushion of the extra goal. The Pickford save today saved us from a certain two points dropped and we wont get that lucky every week.

honestly worried by that performance, we looked really disjointed and couldn't seem to create many quality chances nor consistently threaten their goal. very sloppy. felt like all three of the defence, midfield and attack were disconnected from one another without much good link up and coordination inbetween. klaassen was pretty poor as was schneiderlin, martina and even jagielka honestly. gana did well though as did rooney, pickford and keane. everyone else was average.

i liked rooney's performance but with how deep he drops it just means we have less bodies up front and even fewer players to link up with the likes of sandro and DCL. need a big man up front to bring everyone into play around him

Martina is the worst player by a distance in that team today. Let davies, Kenny or holgate play there in my opinion. Glad Rooney got his goal looked well hungry for it. pickford looks an absolute class signing

Proper toilet duck performance in the first half. A lot better in the second.

Keane, Pickford, Baines, Gueye, Rooney all superb.

Schneidelin, Klaassen were dissappointing.

Begs the point Rooney looks atop playmaker!

...he certainly shouldn't play the furthest forward.

Encouraged by Keane and Pickford, Joey, they look very good business. DCL is the only focal point CF we have so that needs to be addressed but bring in a striker and Sigurdsson and we look ok, especially when Bolasie and Coleman come back.

Still not sure what Martina adds, I'd love to see Kenny's energy at RB.

Rooney proved a lot of people wrong today. The way he ran into the box and finished was like Lukaku had never left. Hope he can do that a few more times this season.

Keane solid. His defending partners sloppy. Gueye relentless. Schneiderlin unusually poor. Sandro, DLC did okay. Klaassen a bit pedestrian.

And Jordan Pickford, wow. This lad is going to be quite something. Commanding presence, leading from the back. Not only a great promising keeper but makes the defence in front of him better. Cracking shot stopper.

Counter attacking threat is disappointing. If there's room for Sigurdsson, another striker and maybe even another attacking player it would add more urgency to the attack. And would say there is a need for a defender, with Mori out we need someone who can read the game better than Jags and Williams do. Room for improvement but good result in the end.

We won mate, enjoy it.

Also not to poke holes - but he didn't make us points by scoring the extra goal, he just he just allayed fears that we'd balls it up
