Ross Barkley

Well, yes because Free-Kicks and Corners can fall into their own category. 'Set-Pieces' or something.

Plus I think more or less everyone uses 'key passes' and 'chances created' to rank and compare players now.

As an example:

Thanks mate. Where on earth would we be without the old "won contests per game" and "touches per game" metrics?

I scatch my head to think how we all understood football before all this sooper dooper stuff.

Suddenly taking an interest in what pundits think when it suits? Jenas was an utter no mark player who wouldn't know a bit of attacking football if it hit him in the face. A completely ridiculous pundit who has never said anything that the average fan is not capable of seeing for himself. Jenas rates Spurs player higher than Everton player shocker. The same Alli who soiled his pants in the summer, a tournament that Ross' hard work landed him at. Jenas shouldn't even allow himself an opinion on a player like Barkley, it's like Tony Hibbert having a pop at Jordi Alba for his attacking football.

These Alli Barkley comparisons are woeful. This is the same Alli completely anonymous in the Euros and all forms of European competition for Spurs? He's a nothing player when he doesn't have Dembele backing him up and Eriksen pulling strings. I'll open myself to vaulting by saying Ross will do far more in the game than him.

Ouch, someone won't be happy with that, he's getting better.

Compare your current opinion about Ross, to what you were saying about him around New Year. And your having a go at Jenas' opinion!!!!!!! What would you have said if Jenas reinforced your opinion?????????? Here's what you said about Ross then...............................

If he at least put the basics in of work rate, aggression, decent first touch, considered passing etc. then I could forgive him a lot. When he spends most games walking around, jumping out of 50:50s, getting easily bullied off the ball, messing up simple passes, and ballooning set pieces then it's hard to get behind him. If he had zero talent you could just write him off as not good enough but when you can see how gifted he is you have to put it down to rubbish attitude, poor concentration, lack of practise, and shoddy physical condition.

That was your opinion of Ross leading up to New Year. So, since New Year, In the 9 games we have played, Ross has suddenly gone from the above to being better than Alli!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, ok mate.

Ironically you started the stats by using dribbles per game to demonstrate Barkley's decline. lollollol
Dribbles per game is shorn of outcome and underlines just how much a player is getting on the ball and trying to force the issue. It's the perfect stat to demonstrate the view expressed by Jenas and others about Barkley's lack of adventurism these days.

Dribbles per game doesn't tell you anything about how much a player is getting on the ball.

Hilariously that's literally exactly what key passes/chances created is for, not dribbles.

I don't think I ever looked at any of our players stats apart from goals scored. If I watch a player over a length of time and I think he's been good/bad stats won't change my mind.

Don't see the problem with this, he was playing awfully round the turn of the year, the whole team was. I've even said there though that his talent was always there. He's now putting the work in and it's paying rewards getting him back to the level we know he should be at. I stand by the above, he is guilty of all if that, his form now is proof of that, this is what he can do when he is working. For me he has greater natural talent than Alli and when he's in this form there's only one I'd rather have in my team.

What constitutes a dribble? Is anything beyond 5 steps with the ball under control a dribble? Would that include walking? Do you have to have beaten a man? Does it count as a dribble if you run 10 yards and then get tackled and you get broken on? Because that would be a pretty useless dribble wouldn't it? Are you still even reading this?

Do you know @davek ?

Under a manager that didn't constantly hang him out to dry in the media but kept firm instructions on how to play in a more disciplined manner in-house.

I agree that it is a weird one. Weird that he chose to criticise him in public. I would have thought doing it in private would be the more professional approach. Maybe he thought that was the only way to get the message across, both to Ross and the media? I don't know, I think there may be a bit of 'look at me, im the boss' about it.

I have enjoyed Barkley's performances recently though, even if he has been a bit less maverick. He seems to have learned how to slide tackle overnight, which is odd but satisfying to watch.
