What was a bit concerning was what he said about the FA Cup win the wigan. Asked if Wigan's FA Cup run contributed to their relegation he said yes.

He kind of blamed it on the fixtures, as there were still premier league matches to be played after the cup final. He said it cost them at least 4 points.

I'm sorry but if you are in a relegation battle, you have to prioritise the league over the cups. The financial implications on a club like Wigan going down are just too great. The fact that he intimidates that Wigan could have stayed up had it not been for their cup victory is pretty shocking.

Take cup competitions seriously but never at the expense of sacrificing the league.
 

What makes me laugh is that if we went into the archives of this place and all the Martinez threads in the fist 18 months or so there'd be some great examples of adulation from loads of posters who heralded the man as the one who had finally brought us into the 21st century football wise. And anyone who comes under that description has no room whatsoever to be having a go at RM right now...which would rule out most of the forum in my rough estimation, because the vast majority were in that column back then.

When some posters do remain consistent though and do retain their earlier positions and respect for the man they are vilified for it....vilified for not being as fickle as those criticising them, presumably.

Anyone who still defends the same bloke though after 2 seasons of dire football and comedy defending is clearly someone who cannot see what is front of his own eyes. It isn't a bad thing to change your mind over such a long period of time, if people didn't do that they would still be with the first girl they ever kissed come what may.
 
He's certainly in the right place at the moment. Belgium playing in only one competition at a time will be a huge advantage to him.

...but surely you can change an opinion on something. Martinez started well and looked like he could move the club on post-Moyes but he lost his way and lost the players. You are allowed to reflect this rather than stick stubbornly to an earlier view.

Changes in circumstances and performances can allow people to change there mind.

I take the opposite view because I see football as a spectacle and not a business. What is football all about? I'd say it's fulfilling the sometimes ridiculous dreams of the people who put their heart and should into it and who believe one day they will have their place in the sun. That club Wigan have had an inauspicious history and never in a million years did any of them believe their dreams would ever be fulfilled that they would step onto a global stage and win a trophy that is seen as the most prestigious in domestic cup competitions the world over. They did that and that can never be taken away.

Wigan would always some day be relegated to the lower leagues. They just cant sustain PL football. Many bigger clubs than them have gone through that trap door and it would have happened sooner rather than later. It's a pity for them, but there are clubs as big as Newcastle who haven't won a trophy for generations and they did so very recently. That's what football is all about: the romance and excitement of fulfilling ambitions. If I were them I'd far rather have that than no trophies ever and a couple more miserable years fighting relegation in the PL.

Yes, they can change an opinion. But they have no right to vilify others who still retain their previous position. How does that work?

Think it's more we're just perplexed you've retained your position. Captain and his sinking ship springs to mind although the ship sunk long ago.

There's a difference between defending the last two season's under Martinez and his overall record here, which as has been stated today on GoS included a record first season and cup runs. For three seasons in charge that is not bad at all. And the last two seasons here also does not pipe anyone down from highlighting his pre and post Everton career.

In short: those continuing their attempts to ridicule Martinez and those who still hold him in respect dont really have a clue about football imo.
 
he's an idiot, a nice man but an idiot.

He will do well at international level to a point, because that's literally all he's good for is cup competitions.

He can't manage a big team in the league, end of.
