What would be seen as a successful season?

What would be a decent season in terms of league position?

How on earth do you quantify that statement?! A squad with morale at rock bottom, that had finished two consecutive seasons in 11th/12th, was aging and lacking quality in depth and you think someone should walk in and turn it around in a season?!....
What, the massive gap of moving one place into the top half was going to require years of major surgery to accomplish?

Pffffft!

Wasn't my point. My (obvious to most) point was that we have a paper thin first team that needs upgrades in nearly every single position and it'll have to be done in the summer...and that the spending of £72M this season has not got very far in reconfiguring this first team....probably because this manager has paid through the nose for those players he has brought in apart from Gueye.

This manager bought in 6 players that have improved the first team massively.

And thats despite 1 of them being crocked.

We have seen a reduction from goals conceded last season from 35 GA to 18 GA already, thats thanks to Williams, Stek and Gana, Bolaise was making a massive difference and Morgs and Mola have slotted in nicely.

And its not 72m, its 80m, a net spend of MINUS 8m.

Not bad house keeping.

Now were out of the cups, id say finish 7th so we at least have a chance of Europe, continue playing some kids get them ready and finally beat them gobshites at anfield for the first time in how many years. that'll do me

...bit odd having this over half way through the season and two of the options are very unlikely (top 4 and EL).

For me, we are going through a period of significant change and I want to see progress on and off the pitch. Things have improved in the last month or so, more of that to the end of the season will be fine.
Why do you say that? If Man U win the Carling/milk whatever the hell its called now cup we are in the EL.

England get 4 spots 2 in the league 5/6 and 2 in the cups. If a top 6 team win the LC 7th get Europe, if 2 top 6 get to the fa cup final 8th get EL. If 1 or non of the top 6 get in the fa cup final then the winner or runner up( if a top 6 team wins) gets the spot.

EL is a much richer comp then it's been in the past. Last time we were in it winner got a total of 15 mil now it's about 22mil plus tv revenue

No mate. We're saying that progress takes time. It will take more than one season to turn the crap team Martinez left into a top four and eventually title contending side. So no we are not saying 7th is ok. Nobody is happy with seventh. But we all accept that to attain top four next season we will need to finish at least 7th this season.
Crap team into a top four team? What the one that got top 5 with a record points tally? That one?

Mate, never in a month of Sundays do I expect this Dutchman to get top 4. But that is his task, just as it was his predecessors task - who spent a lot less money than this feller will have spent even by the end of this coming summers transfer window.

So, just to clarify: 7th followed by 7th wont do it. Not by a long chalk.

Not sure thats correct Friend.

5th gets Europa, the other 2 places are given to the cup winners.

Gueye is the success so far. That's it. The jury is in for two of them (Bolaise and Stekelenburg) and the jury is out for the rest.

Just because their newly bought doesn't mean their good.

..but Man Utd winning the League Cup is a dependency, there's nothing we can do about it. Our season being a success is not based on United getting a win against Southampton.

Well our net spend isn't anywhere close to £72m, it's around £25m with the possibility of receiving more fee's from loaned out players. The business we have done HAS gone a long way to reconfiguring the squad (obvious to literally everyone but you)

If you sincerely believe our squad was in better nick this time 6 months ago, you are seriously deluding yourself. I suspect you don't though. You just enjoy slinging mud at Koeman and hoping it sticks.
