...John Buckingham has died aged 76. Buckingham was the jockey who rode 100-1 shot Foinaven to famously win the Grand National in 1967. Those as old as me will remember a lose horse causing a massive pile up at a fence on the 2nd circuit, Buckingham and Foinaven were well in arrears but the jockey skilfully found a way through the the melee and jumped the last few to victory.

The incident will remain in Aintree history forever as the fence has since been known as Foinaven.

...lovely story. That would've won her £50.50, not to be sniffed at in those days.

The pile up is worth a look at, I presume it's on YouTube. Horses and jockeys everywhere and all of a sudden this one horse appears, jumps the fence and the rest is history. It was an amazing incident, perhaps somebody clever can post it.
