We only have DMs in the whole squad mein frandel, we cant play Barkley there for 2 reasons, reason1, he cant tackle, he doesnt track players and he isnt good enough to play in midfield, reason2, if Barkley plays in midfield we dont have another ACM in the whole squad or another striker to play alongside Lukaku.

Options.
there are other formations though Goat, a truly top class manager would find a solution, not continue stubbornly with the same method, and personally I think the opportunity to develop Barkley into a top class CM may have already been missed, as that should have been his position, and that's down to cowardly management, not just on Koemans part.

Another part of the problem is Barry can't play DM on his own, and the mangers have both been slavish in their devotion to an aging player

Honestly tho mate, I cant think of a single formation that would work, now as you say, a better manager than me should be able to find 1, but its grim, it really is.

A while ago I would have stuck Geri and Superkev in certain formations, but both have stunk the place out this season.

Middling, as is the team.

We used to have 2 centre midfield players, one was always a bit more defensive than the other. Sometimes, they took turns in staying back and moving forward. The ability to pass the ball, was always a prerequisite and Ross can do that. Formations/systems change but, the ability to play football hasn't and anyone suggesting Ross Barkley can't play, in this Everton team, seriously needs to think again.

I guess if carvalho or mata had been signed maybe the fried cheese eater was thinking the same things regards the ability to alter our rigid structure, Martinez was a slave to two DCM's often with the bizarre notion of preferring a cm on the wing, we now find ourselves unable to adapt, and we are struggling, I'm preaching to the choir here, but last season Besic looked the only CM capable of breaching the line between DCM and AM, for all the fanfare I see Gueye as a hustler and runner and little more, Ross should have been developed into that position, rather than be left in limbo between a striker who doesn't hold the ball up and two cm's incapable of going forward, and he has suffered for it. I don't like Witsel, but I'm hoping that with the interest in him and carvalho, Koeman at least saw the need to find a DCM who can operate as a pivot and allow things to progress in from of him, Barry can't do that, and again Mata and even that bell Sissoko, shows at least the manager was looking to widen options and flexibility in the squad, he will probably get two more windows to do so, but theres some signs from I don't like, and he is unspeakably dutch in his arrogance

Highlighted a few words that sum the situation (going forward) for me.
Is it arrogance or, plain talking? Or more Moyes than Moyes?

I agree with all this Friend, as bad as Sissoko is and as much of a bellend he defo is, he would have added something a little different to the midfield, as you say same with Witsel and Carvs.

Guess we just need to wait for Le Bosnian Zidane return to save us, hes our only hope.

I wouldn't go that far. Sissoko's effort level wouldnt be any better at Everton. But I do agree we need some more effort in the midfield. I would actually drop Barry and put in McCarthy. We can't play any worse and we need to shake up several positions. I'd start Gerry, Funes Mori and McCarthy next match.

I think you have to give Koeman a few more transfer windows to shape this team but being outworked can't be acceptable.

Im on my phone. Can someone please copy and paste the article in the link? ;)

Here we are :

But OK…it’s really not

The performance from Everton at St Mary’s yesterday was unacceptable on so many levels.

  • Slow out of the blocks, yet again
  • Persisting with apparently disinterested, driftwood players
  • Refusal to pick or involve any youngsters
  • A pathetic 8 mins of two strikers
With another six or seven games to go before any reinforcements can be brought in (inc Man U, Arsenal & Liverpool at home) you wonder where the next point is coming from. A flying start in the August sunshine v Spurs, & a sublime second half hat-trick from Lukaku at Sunderland seem light years ago.

More worrying still, what is the Manager willing or indeed able to do about it? The incredible superlatives of Martinez have been replaced with Koeman’s laid back demeanour “But OK, that’s football”. Pragmatic, honest yes, we love that about the new boss, but I don’t buy his powerlessness until the next window, & I’m not liking his apparent lack of passion & connection with the fans.

At the final whistle yesterday he should have sent all the players over to thank us fans for travelling all the way to the South Coast on a Sunday. He should have come over himself & shown his appreciation.

After the opening game, slow starts have characterised our season to date. Yesterday was just pathetic: our kick off, lose the ball after 10 secs, concede within a minute. Koeman has to take his share of the blame for that, as he does for the way he set us up at Chelsea.

For weeks there have been calls for Davies & Holgate to make the starting XI, for Dowell, Calvert-Lewin & others to make the squad. Rhino’s U23s sit atop their League, why not replace some of the disinterested “regulars” with keen, hungry & able kids. Dropping Holgate for a fit again Coleman was questionable at best, playing McCarthy in favour of Davies v Swansea was baffling.

Yesterday only two players ever showed for the ball: Gana & Barry. Everyone else hid, when Barkley did get it he tripped himself up, time & again (sums up his last 2 seasons). Lukaku was isolated, trying to survive off long balls. He is not a lone striker, he needs a partner up top, so Koeman spoilt him with 8 minutes of Enner Valencia yesterday.

Players’ body language stank the place out yesterday, not for the first time. Where does that come from? Well Koeman was hardly animated, sat down 95% of the time & skulking off down the tunnel at Full Time.

There is a school of thought that Koeman has given up on Mirallas, McCarthy, Deulofeu, Funes Mori & others, even Jags. If that’s true, then stop picking them, because, of the above, nearly all seem to have lost interest, & Jags has lost all form, pace & confidence. Yes we need a real clear out &, yes, this is a three or four window “project”, but losing at Burnley & Bournemouth, failing to beat Swansea & Palace at home is piss poor.

There are games to play & points to be won before January, the Manager can do things now to arrest this slide.

We are, and right now things are far from OK. That’s football.

All this tosh about the U23s.

You'd have thought Oumar Niasse being able to score in those games (or indeed pass to someone in the same coloured shirt) should tell people all they need to know about the standard of it

Big Ron and co were there to see the derby a month or so ago and the youngsters were deplorable. He won't be picking any of them any time soon.

Bit off of the kids to waste his time after he'd given up his evening for them

Sick of reading people say play the U23s personally, none of them are game changers.

Tom Davies looks a very good prospect, hes tidy on the ball and will have a fairly succesful career at a certain level, Mason Holgate, Brendan Galloway also, but none of them are game changers, none of them are the fabled number 8 with magic in their boots, none of them are the number 10 door unlocker and none of them are the beastly number 9 who slots for giggles.

Thats what we need, not some young lads who we will destroy with our groans, look at poor Ross, thats how it ends for them, killed by ya dar moaning at Goodison.
