Ronald Koeman discussion

Lol. You really dont get it do you?

You dont have to play 5-3-2 to have more behind the ball. You drag both wide players deep and play more compact lines. That's great, but there's no transition beyond a ball pumped long to Lukaku (Koeman is attempting to play him like that big lump Pelle) or out wide into space for Bolasie to run after.

It's utter trash. Please dont try and defend it.

Its trash cos our CF is wanking himself off every time we start attacks, you have no idea how Ronny wants us to play.

He wants the front 4 to close down the other team when on the ball, your deluded if you think Bolaise even knows what our half looks like.

The tactics arent the issue, the players not performing their simple duties on the pitch are the only issue, but ok, nevermind, we will just get players in that can follow simple instructions, I mean I dont speak Belgian, but I can only assume that when Ronny tells Rom to close down and be mobile its lost in translation and Rom assumes hes telling him to stand still and cry like a manchild.

But you act like Ronny is telling us everything is ok, hes not, hes clearly stated our attacking play is utter tosh and hes clearly stated that the players arent doing what is asked of them, as I say, they will be sold and replaced by players that CAN perform to a mangers instructions.

In all honesty I think we all wanted to see the defence tighten up and to stop conceding silly goals.
RK has done this in the main, but in doing this he has compromised the attacking threat we had.
I guess his next job is to find that balance, if we don't we will continue to struggle
The improved solidity at the back has came through a more rigid approach to positioning with players behind the ball and an aura of sensible play.

However, as you rightly mention, it's compromised our attacking approach as the forward players are becoming stagnant and our play is slower.

What we need is a defence that is effective in its primary role of stopping conceding, while still allowing our forward line to be a genuine threat.

Look at Chelsea under Conte as an example of having a defence that's solid but while continuing to enable an attacking style of play.

It doesn't help however that our midfield is notoriously slow and one-dimensional which is clear for all to see, so it's a two-tiered issue.

I've seen how Koeman's teams play at S'ton mate. It's a very direct game. No guile, no invention, no attraction.

I'll tell you what you've done: you've fallen into the trap of seeing and equating a pressing game with actual football. You worship a false God. The pressing is the platform to play football from, not the objective. Pressing is running hard and closing down space and ratting away at ankles. I dont know, maybe that's what you see as proper football. I see it as no greater a task than putting on a kit and doing warm ups.

Its how Everton should play football.

"We play it on the carpet, we play it in the air
Whichever way we play it, we play it fair and square."

Yes, thats what I see as proper football, our players fighting for every ball, our players not watching as a player dinks past them, the desire to win.

Im not sure what your idea of proper football is David, but based on the last 2 years, I suspect you enjoy watching our CBs and GK increase their passing stats.

A bit like Swansea yesterday.

For a team lacking in confidence and currently with questionable quality in their squad, they also showed speed and promise when on the break.

Often when we break as a team it starts with so much promise before it eventually peters out for indecision, poor positioning or lack of movement.

I hate to use that age-old term of having the 'killer instinct', but we seem to lack it until we're either behind or in the last few minutes of the game.

One of the best teams to press or close down (old school) was Wimbledon
I would hate that is were we are heading

I probably said it yesterday Goat but he was fuming in his presser.

The last time I saw him that angry was, weirdly enough, when S'ton battered us last season yet we some how came away with a point from Goodison.

They defended resiliently and dug in.

Our failure to sign a playmaker was again shown up against a packed defence.

I dont understand why so many knives are out.

Its not like hes telling us everything is ok, hes as pissed as we are.

This is my thing as well.

You know that I stuck by Bobby (wrongly so in hindsight), but I don't get when some of our fanbase (maybe it is just online) turned into such cry arses.

Yeh, we've been crap lately. We all know that. Nobody will know that more than Koeman.

He'll know what he wants and he'll have an idea of how to get there.

It's 12 games in. We're better off than we were this time last year when we'd been very good ('style wise') and were all pretty happy with it (in the main).
