Ronald Koeman discussion

Sure I don't think Koeman should have said these things but it's obvious him and Lukaku have similar ambitions. Lukaku has his allegiance to Chelsea, Koeman has his to Barcelona. They both saw Everton as a stepping stone.

But, they both need to prove themselves here if they want to move on. I've come to terms that both are using us to move onto better things and I'm actually okay with that. I'm not okay with the disparaging remarks. Yet I know that as well as wanting the club to progress, they need to achieve the best they can here if they want to attract the interest of Europe's best.

And if they can get us challenging then great. I don't see why we can't use them as much as they are using us. We should be looking at better when both eventually move on if we want to progress.

Though I don't want to get into Koeman's departure too much, he's only just got started.

I like straight talking managers, but why make it hard for yourself? The knives will be out now, so he'd better produce the goods or this will be used as a stick to beat him with.

For sure.

Many of them would walk into the Celtic team

Who do you think we have that are CL quality apart from Rom?

CHeers Terry

Khalekan has basically summed it up.

The Champions Lge is full of rubbish until the last 16, all of our team could walk in to sides in the group stages.

You only have to use Celtic as an example.

Ashely Williams for example has just played for a team who got to the semi final of the Euros. Stek (who I don't rate whatsoever) has played in a world cup final, both tournaments are the pinnace of world football never mind just club football.

Got to disagree with you here, Williams is probably the best defender we have on the books at the moment so he may not look out of place in a CL side, and Rom too

but we have loads of players of CL quality? no I don't think so, who are they?

and I don't think citing international football as a barometer of quality comparatively against club football makes sense either

Thanks TeRRy

Which is what we need(ed) to improve though...

'Long-term planning' is great, but to do that successfully you need to bring in players of quality/in their prime to set a level (e.g. get us back into the top 6/7 - which is the aim).

Long-term planning is next to useless if you're finishing 11th season after season.

beat me too it, our squad was fully of youngsters and those over or around the 30 year mark. we needed a few players in that prime age bracket.

He didn't say 'I'd go if I was him though'?

"I think he can emulate Patrick Kluivert, who also rose to prominence at a young age and enjoyed a fantastic career.

"He eventually played for Barcelona and I can see Lukaku doing the same.

"Everton should normally not be the end for him.

"Romelu will not have made the most of his career if he plays for Everton for the remainder of his career.

"He has the potential to play for a bigger club than Everton, but nobody knows what will happen after this season."

I just don't see what the fuss is about.
Well that is very much a case of semantics. If those last 2 sentences don't equate to saying 'I'd leave if I was him' then I don't know what would.

It's not about 'fuss'. As has been said many times, it's not a sackable offence or a catastrophic bombshell, but it's an unnecessary thing to say and suggests that Everton is not the place for ambitious players to be. If you don't see why that's a problem then I really don't know what to say.

We all know that there are bigger clubs than Everton, we all know we haven't won anything for years. This is kind of the point though. We don't have a lot left - basically just our pride and some hope that things will change and our day will come again. Statements like this strip that away from us. Do you think Moshiri will be happy that on the day we've put half season tickets on sale, the manager has conceded that even our mid/long term plan (say the next 10 years) won't see us competing at the top table? I certainly don't.

The whole team would walk into the Celtic first eleven, each and everyone of them.

Without even looking at the other average sides in it.

If that doesn't get the point across then nothing will.

I suppose there may be an argument for Gana Gueye, but it's subjective really .
But if we're being honest the celtic team doesn't really have CL quality does it?

They just qualify for it each year by default.

Thanks Ted

They are ill-judged comments at best, irresponsible at worst. He is essence devaluing the club to players of Lukaku level, which is strange given the need to attract players of that quality to the club.

Or, he's simply bigging up Lukaku and no other player who potentially may join us is actually going to care, more than likely because they don't actually care about a club they don't play for yet and to them it is just a job.

But okay, that's football.
