But that conveniently leaves a big massive gaping hole in the middle of all the things he could have said doesn't it? It's not like he had to either say 'no chance he's leaving' or 'I'd probably go if I was him', there's literally a million acceptable, diplomatic ways of answering the question but he's chosen to talk the club down. It's not offensive, it's not the end of the world, and very few people are saying it is. It is, however, totally unnecessary and dispiriting for an already disillusioned fanbase.
It's probably accurate to say that we have absolutely no chance of qualifying for the Champions League or winning a cup in the next 3/4 years, it's probably accurate to say that we'll struggle to get more than 5/6 points from our next 6 games - but would you be happy if the manager came out and said so? I wouldn't, and I don't see why this situation is any different.
He didn't say 'I'd go if I was him though'?
"I think he can emulate Patrick Kluivert, who also rose to prominence at a young age and enjoyed a fantastic career.
"He eventually played for Barcelona and I can see Lukaku doing the same.
"Everton should normally not be the end for him.
"Romelu will not have made the most of his career if he plays for Everton for the remainder of his career.
"He has the potential to play for a bigger club than Everton, but nobody knows what will happen after this season."
I just don't see what the fuss is about.
