I was studying ( getting pissed and loafing about) at Warwick University at the time. Watched it with some Coventry City fans in the boozer.
They were all rooting for the toffee's. One of those rare day's when you just know that you are going to win.
I would have swapped this though, for all the times that the RS have turned us over in finals.
Yes and Nicky Butt was clapping the Everton end when he walked round with the United team, Everton Fans singing " Always look on the bright side of life " to the United fans, and what about the look on the two princes kippers, William and Harry, looked like it was the end of the world to them.Threw my blue nose at paul ince when he walked off, then he clapped us an i felt a pratt
Was desperate for a ticket for this but really struggling badly. Frankly I had given up all hope.
Was working late shift the day before the game and called in my local after work. One of the regulars (a bloke I didn't know particularly well, and a koppite as it happens) stood in front of me with a huge grin on his face. Frankly he was getting on my nerves as he wouldn't tell me why he looked so smug.
I was on the verge of giving him a crack as I thought he was taking the p... at the fact I didn't have a ticket.
After about 15 minutes of me moodily growling at him to wipe the grin off his face, he reached into his pocket and handed me an envelope.
Not one but TWO tickets !
Now I'm as straight as they come, but I would have happily slipped him one there and then in the packed pub. In fact, I think he spent the rest of the night trying to stop me kissing him.
To cut a long story short, I rolled home about 2AM and woke my (10 year old) son up, waving the tickets and singing. (Also woke the rest of the house; The wife wasn't happy)
We even managed to book coach tickets. Me and my lad absolutely knackered but deliriously happy, both slept most of the way home despite the fact the coach was 'bouncing'
I have moved house (twice) since then, but still bump into the bloke two or three times a year. He used to be a salesman and had won the tickets for most sales that month. Still love the bloke and always make sure to buy his ale.
It really depresses me when I read about people sharing their memories of great days like this and the ones from the 80s, I'm only 22 and haven't ever experienced this yet (and genuinely fearful that I never will). I've been to Wembley 3 times but we've lost on every occasion so all the BIG games I have memories of have been of us losing so they're tainted.
I want us to win a trophy so badly so the memory can stick with me forever and I want us to do it soon, not when I'm in my 40s or 50s. I want tell my kids about the day when I was a young lad down at Wembley and rat-arsed with my mates and how my nerves were shot to bits as we hung on to win the cup.
The highlights of my time supporting Everton are the European experiences and a few memorable wins at Goodison but they don't compare to the ecstasy of us winning a trophy. I pray that I get to experience it soon.
The Quater final was ace and the semi one of my top moments as a fan. Joe Parkinson was awesome that day.
