Gerard Deulofeu

Good post that. Prompts the following thoughts:

- RM found and dropped great players like Deulofeu and Galloway (He also improved and sold Naismith albeit for £8m). RM is an odd man.
- Half the crosses in that clip were at best half chances for RM, which the big man finished off well. That said, clearly RM is expecting a ball to attack which shows the player's understanding, so for me Deulofeu (although occasionally befitting the 'luxury' tag I've seen elsewhere in this thread) merits an impact sub's place and Cup starts. He's had his best moments in the cup as that clip also shows.

I'm all for pace and power as you need it in the Prem, but 'craft' and the ability to beat players, play wide, cross, slot killer passes has a place in the game, too. GD reminds on occasion of Pienaar who i'll never forget dominated a biggish Chelsea side in the 2-0 at Goodison with movement and a range of passing. It's once of my fondest memories there.

Put the work in Geri, you've got what it takes lad.

probably one of the most exciting player to wear the Royal Blue shirt in the last 10 years

and he is not playing frequently..

what's wrong with this picture?

Because when he has played he's been wasteful, and the other night his car broke down?

He absolutely has no right to start every game. He has to perform just like the rest of them.

Our fanbase is getting ridiculous.

Best start in 38 years, 5th after 7 games, looking loads better defensively but a few key attacking players aren't currently in form (Barkley, Mirallas, Bolasie inconsistent - though he's still set up loads of good (well, golden) chances that should have been put away).

Yet we still find things to whinge about.

I agree in the main

The best start in 38 years is correct but it has been a start I reckon every manager would of been jumping through hoops for.
When I seen the start I wanted momentum that would push us on and ready us for the more difficult games ahead.
I am not foolish enough to say the wheels have fell off the wagon, because I don't think they have. I will say though I don't believe we have taken full advantage of this run of games, and my fear is the momentum we created has fell away slightly.
I got asked by my RS mate the other day over what I thought of the start, and my answer was simple....a decent start.
I have said in various posts that expectation is outstripping realism as to what we can achieve, we have a tough season ahead as simply we are not a top 4 team and we are at best a challenger for the Europa league.
The last 3 games have been hugely dissapointing, but look around the Prem it is happening to various teams.
Time for people to take stock and start to add realism to our position and potential finish

I'm not too keen on him playing in the centre but would like to see it once or twice just to make sure.

If only there was a cup competition where we could do things like that.

Oh.
We should play him against City for the first 60 mins and tell him to do what he did against Spurs. i.e. Press the hell out of them.

Plus his pace could destroy City who leave themselves wide open to the counter. Give him the ball with space to run into and very few can catch him. Of course he also needs Koeman to tell him to "Vardy it" when he gets a one on one chance.

Well most had problems with him because he didn't track back and didn't play the team game. That's fair enough. His game certainly wasn't perfect. It still isn't but it's improving. His work rate is leagues ahead of what it was a few seasons ago.
He could just run around the centre circle clucking like a chicken for 80% of the game, I'd still play him for that boss 10% of the remainder.

I thought the second half game last Friday night was crying out for Deulofeu .
We had done well enough in the first half. Efficient and compact with out being brilliant.
We were worth the goal lead at half time and the pundits should have been asking why the defender had his boot raised so high rather than why Jagielka had his hands in front of his face in an attempt not to have sustained a nasty injury.

In the second half Palace were the better team, we had run out of ideas and I just could not see where a goal was going to come from.

I know many on here really rate Kevin Mirallas, I am not not one of those and again on Friday when he did come on I felt he had no impact on the game.

Deulofeu changes games and creates huge problems for defences. Palace looked in control in the second half and nothing we did changed that at all. We looked one paced and unimaginative... I thought.
We had Barry, Gueye and Cleverley on the pitch and for all the qualities they may have, none of the three are in any way creative. I know Barkley was not brilliant, but Cleverley staying on the pitch and taking off Barkley surprised me.
It screamed of a cautious substitution at a time when we needed to grab the initiative.
