Not really. Witsel is more of a box to box midfielder, Carvahlo is a defensive midfielder.

I would still much rather have this guy over Witsel. Unless we get both, but why should we when we have Gibson?

Witsel would be brought in as McCarthy's replacement.

Agreed. Could get a decent fee for him, and having three defensive mids who don't offer much going forward wouldn't make a lot of sense.

Problem is we also have Besic, Gibson just signed a new contract and the academy is producing potentially high quality centre mids.

Witsel, Carvalho, Barry, Mccarthy, Gibson, Basic, Davies, Ledson and the impressive Baningime who could join this crop in a couple of seasons means we are overloaded in this position, potentially Barkley might drop back from the no10 role too. Mccarthy is someone I would like to keep, but if we added Witsel and Carvalho he would be benched and if we could pull in 15-20m for him I could understand why we might move him on.
