This is what is confusing me about it a bit. I'd be surprised (and sad) if he was bought to take the central or right sided spots from Ross or Del respectively.

Mata did play on the left much earlier in his career but has I think come out and said recently that he wants to play centrally. I don't get it. Cracking player but no idea what the plan would be.
Del or Ross don't have to play every game, it's about having options. Would imagine if he goes 3 behind the striker they'll move about quite often aswell not stay rigid

i think an evertonless lukaku would mean finding a way to score without having to rely so much on 1 player meaning that the players are under less pressure to give the ball to the "main man" and maybe have more freedom to express themselves and have shots at goal

someone like mirallas may have flourished in such a situation and other players may have stepped up their games and furthered their goal tally's in midfield.
to a certain extent though you could see how badly martinez managed the team when we played carlisle i think it was in the cup. Kone started and every time he got into shooting positions he was essentially looking for where lukaku (on the bnech) was to create for him. It was a little bit odd to see tbh, like stopping on the edge of the box rather than going for goal sort of thing.

But you may be giving more credit to the team than they earned last year. Remember this is the same team who did not defend using the basics far too often. This is the same team that were knackered after an hour every week, the same team who struggled to beat anyone who wasn't in the relegation zone all season. Coincidentally once sunderland left it, they beat us, and once norwich dropped into it we beat them!

But yeah, point is without rom last season we would have struggled as their replacements were just not good enough. They still aren't, i hope kone gets sold and Naisse given away for all i care. they aren't very good strikers, and (vault me if you want) would struggle to score 10 goals between them if given all season to.

I think anyway.

I think he'd be played on the right, and would be a massive upgrade on Deulofeu.

Think if we do end up signing Mata then he would be playing centrally off Rom, Deulofeu wide right and Barkley would be playing deeper - WITH a new centre midfielder alongside him (the links with Witsel and Strootman show Koeman is trying to get in a very top quality dominating centre midfielder) - if we go and play a 4-4-1-1 type deal, but he's knows for using several formations through a season as well so his remarks the other day about finding out what Barkleys' natural position is would suggest he could end up playing differently depending how we intend to set up with the new manager

Barkley playing alongisde Strootman or Witsel (or potentially both) will be absolutely massive for his development into the player we all hope he does become, imagine how much he'd learn training with those two and Mata every day...

Deulofeu has a big future ahead of him and will be world class. Mata is good but he won't get any better and he doesn't work hard enough. Mata didn't make the Euros because he's not really any use. Just a luxury player.

Mata instead of Deulofeu wouldn't be an upgrade, it would slow the play down and we would be back in Martinezland. Him behind Rom would be better, but whether it would be better than someone who could split the attention of the defenders (in the way that Rooney would, for instance) is another matter and we would probably end up with him and Barkley looking to play killer balls to someone who was defended by two or three players.

I suppose it depends on what United want for him; unless they are giving him away I don't really see what the point of buying him would be.

Witzel is a much better shout though and we would do well to sign him. Him, a better keeper than Robles and someone with a bit of pace and who can play on the left and support Rom (in the way that Kone tried to do at the start of last season) and we will do alright.

Mate mata is one of the best playmakers in the game still, he is no slower now than when he first arrived at Chelsea either, speed has never been something he relies upon, what he would give us is someone who can actually pick apart a team sitting deep - a major problem with him at United is that they either stuck him out wide where he is less effective than centrally or they sat deep themselves meaning his lack of pace hurt him badly when playing wide.

As for Barkley - IF Mata signed and played centrally then Barkleys role would no longer be the bloke expected to feed balls into Rom would it?, he'd actually be freed up to go past Mata and arrive late in the box, one thing for certain though - Mata in a team would not slow things down

We are going to be linked to everyone....which is nice.

Funny as f at the moment like, some are linking us with top top players and most are still linking us with utter crap, at some point the penny will drop (likely to be after we sign someone 95% of the media think is miles out our reach)

and will be funny to see the same journos currently linking us with dross to suddenly start linking us with boss players

Sounds boss in theory but Barkley and Mata playing together centrally would make for a grand total of one midfielder with any sort of defensive capability to speak of.

It's not even the one/two defensive mids debate, it's just Mata and Barkley are probably two of the flimsiest midfielders in the league defensively.

Hell though if Koeman reckons it would work, brilliant.
