Always a good stopper!

Good riddance. Never really.liked him and I'm neither fat nor 40. One good season apart he was just a big girls blouse who didn't have the skills to go with it.

Call me cynical but I'm always suspicious about these immediate retirements....

Benteke bossed him in that Villa game, Wales past him

I dunno how cannavaro done it me ... brilliant defender at what 5ft 10 max ?

.....yep, fabulous player. Lots of other examples of diminutive CBs, the Argentinian (Ayala?) and Baresi. I think Cannavaro was a lot broader than Heitinga but you know where I'm coming from. Jamie Carragher said he knew he had to retire after playing against Lukaku and not being able to cope physically.

Heitinga was boss at times. If he had a nice big face like Stracqulursi everyone would love him. But he scowled sometimes so people projected their own failed hardman fantasies on to him.

One of the best ball playing defenders we've had over the last 20 years. And in his first year did pretty well as a holding midfielder too (though he seemed to regress in that role as the years went on). I remember one game away to Villa when we were 2-0 up and bossing the game. Heitinga, playing center mid, goes off injured and we ended up drawing 2-2.

Good on ye Jonny H. Decent player he was.

I liked him and he executed the final act in my ruining of Ashley Cole in the FA Cup tie, I'm firmly of the opinion as well that Howard Webb ruined him as a player by booking him at every single opportunity for the slightest of things and making him question himself regarding his tackling.

Retires.

John Heitinga won 87 caps for Holland
Former Everton defender John Heitinga has retired from playing at the age of 32, his club Ajax have announced.

A statement from the Dutch outfit on Monday revealing the news said Heitinga would be taking a job on their coaching staff. He rejoined Ajax last summer from Hertha Berlin on a one-year deal and has made only two Eredivisie appearances since, both as a substitute.

Prior to spending 2014-15 in Germany with Hertha, Heitinga had five years in English football.

He signed for Everton in 2009 and went on to make over 100 Barclays Premier League appearances for the Toffees.

The second half of 2013-14 saw him loaned out from Goodison Park to Fulham, for whom he played 14 times.

Heitinga came through the Ajax academy and had seven seasons as part of their first team before switching to Atletico Madrid for one campaign, then moving on to Everton.

He won 87 caps for Holland and was sent off in the 2010 World Cup final.

Heitinga said: "My ultimate desire was to return to Amsterdam and at the end of the season as a player for the third time celebrate a championship trophy with the Ajax fans.

"Yet I realised in December that the time to put an end to my active career was coming closer.

"The farewell is slightly ahead of schedule. But I look forward to this new chapter in my life.
