Time will tell, won't it?

I'm certain his value will only go up though.

From all accounts (Barrett esp, who is always spot on), we did all we could to get him. Offered Leeds more money up front, offered Byram a very suitable wage. The only thing we couldn't guarantee him was a first-team place from the off - West Ham can do that. And I think that indicates that our (albeit underperforming) squad is better than theirs.

Then how to you draw this conclusion?

I disagree with the logic. A transfer target is a transfer target. Not to mention all the;

"We don't need this backup youngster from Barnsley" - John Stones
"If he was any good, he would have been picked up sooner" - Coleman, Lescott, Cah...

Could go on and on.

Time will tell. I do think we've missed out on this one. We need cover and competition at right back and, his value at us, or where ever he went will go up.

On to the next one Bobby lad. Last time we missed out on a full back like this in Naughton, we picked up Coleman.
Naughton was a joint bid for two Sheffield united lads wasnt it ?
Remember being gutted about that at the time.

I think we have missed out here.
Proper quality cover and competition for Seamus would be a smart move.

Massive shame we've missed out on Byram. Not going to pretend he's gash or anything just because we're not getting him; he would have been great for us.

Definitely had the potential to be but I'm not gonna use it as an excuse to have a go at the club on this occasion. We did everything we could to get him other than being able to offer him a place in the first team.

This is similar to a few years ago when we went for Tadic. That's the only deal that i've been remotely aware of when it was potentially going through. We matched Southampton's initial bid, and he was in talks with us and would have signed had Southampton not upped their offer of both wages and a bid to Twente (I believe they initially offered £9.5mil which ended up being nearer £11.5mil to shirk us off). We didn't want to spend that much as we were aiming to get Rom in - which of course we did.

Hope the next time we play the Hammers, McCarthy does to Byram what he did to Payet. Just to see the FUMAGE from the West Ham mutants.

Our squad is better than theirs...not a bias opinion, just think of the values of players...Coleman, Barkley, Lukaku, Stones, McCarthy et al are all high value players.
Agree that they are not getting the results at present but how many of West Hams players would you put in the same price bracket as those above? Payet?

I really don't think we did give up easily mate. Byram chose the playing time rather than being (at first) second choice.
I can't blame him either.
I'd imagine the money was similar and he chose to start every week.

Plus the fact you get away immediately from Leeds united.. and the lad has had a good few days hasn't he.

Yep only Payet for me. Adrian is a very good goalkeeper, mind, but from their first choice XI and our first choice XI (if all fit) then I could only think of, really, 2 West Ham players I'd look at putting in - and those would be the two I've mentioned.

They are a good side, no doubt, and they may well finish above us this season.

*Edit: Didn't mean to double-quote

I wonder if David Sullivan actually got out of bed to do this deal. Everton done all the fannying about agreeing fee, sell on clause, wages, etc.

Genuinely, had you been part of the negotiations, what would you have done?

As you rightly say, there is no doubt he would have been as astute buy at the money speculated, regardless of whether he usurped Coleman or not in the future.

If there are two teams in for him and only one is offering first team football, seems obvious at 22 years old who he would pick. Plus, had RM lied and given him false promises then we are lumbered with a player who already feels let down within the first 6 months.

I think it's been a catch 22. Yes we need right back cover but cover is the most we need for conceivably the next 5 years. It's a hard sell for any manager to a prospective player.
