I think this is why opinions on Howard are so diverse. He can be a good shot stopper (although rarely these days) if he has to make a reaction save where he hasn't got time to think, rather than having to make a decision on what to do. For example, Wolfsburg at home last season he was brilliant. However, he's awful at just about every other aspect of goalkeeping.
He has no command of his area whatsoever. We concede so many goals from headers within the 6 yard box because Howard is rooted to his line, rather than coming out to claim the ball. When he does come out, he looks a complete bag of nerves.
Ironically, those times he should stay on his line, he's often miles off it, leading to more goals conceded. He doesn't get criticised that much for this because people tend to look at how difficult it was to save the actual shot, rather realising that it would have been an easy save if Howard had been in the right position. For example, both goals in the 2-0 defeat at home to Sunderland towards the end of last season.
He does this thing on direct free-kicks where he shifts his weight really heavily from one foot to the other (also does a little shuffle on long range shots, resulting in him diving too late), so that if he shifts one way at the same time as the free-kick taker shoots the other way, he's off balance and can't get across his goal to make the save. Goals conceded from free-kicks at Anfield and Sunderland last season, which should have been easy saves, were prime examples of this.
I haven't even mentioned all the inexplicable clown antics, where you just find yourself saying, "Why the [insert suitable swear word] did he do that?" Falling on the ball at Sunderland, the star jumps, etc, etc.
He's well past his sell by date. Need to get rid.
absolutely nailed it really. is flaws never get picked up the media, because quite simply pundits are terrible at their jobs. you see him in one on one situations and the weight issue you mention at free kicks sees him always dive out of the way of the ball. it happens so so often, but people just think "keepers shouldn't save one on ones" - with every other keeper they save them and they're labelled as a poor effort. he gets beaten by a lot of poor efforts, just look at soldado last season. there's no coincidence that it was his only? goal all season, it was a crap effort which every other keeper was saving all season.
possibly this is the reason why crap strikers always get their one goal a season vs us? he was a great shot stopper throughout his career but his other areas were lacking, they could be overlooked if he was making a load of saves and winning us points. But that aspect has pretty much neglected him now and he has not one positive attribute to his game. at least i could list positive things about robles!
