Martinez Firm On Stones Future

Roberto Martinez has reiterated that John Stones has a big future at Everton.

The Blues boss was asked about the situation regarding the 21-year-old England international following the Club's 5-3 win over Barnsley in the Capital One Cup second round and said: "The situation with John is very clear. We care about him, will protect and give him everything we can to help him enjoy his football.

"We have great ambition, great desire and big plans for John. We want to be a winning team and to do that we have to keep our best performers. Clearly John is a big part of our future."

Stones played the full 120 minutes against his former club as Everton required extra-time to overcome Lee Johnson's League One side and impressed Martinez with his display.

However, the manager said the game was a good example of why he believes the transfer window should close each summer before competitive action resumes.

"I don’t think John was distracted," he said. "The two centre-halves were the ones who controlled the tempo of what we were trying to do.

"John, for a young man under enormous pressure, was terrific because - I am repeating myself but I’ll say it again – it is wrong for the football authorities to allow the window to be open when there are important games going on.

"We shouldn’t put our players under that pressure because it turns into a circus.

"But John was just a real example of how to perform under massive, massive pressure and, for me, it was an exceptional display by him."

I know it's just words, ultimately...

...but whatever is going on with Stones, or the board... I'm never thought I'd see this side of Martinez as a general on a 'sinking ship' - I feel like he's not just got the board's hand up his arse here, and genuinely has a plan - more-so than ever... *sop*.

You have to think that Stones has been seriously badly advised by someone here (I'm assuming his agent). Martinez said before hand that any transfer request would be rejected and we won't sell him. Now he's lost favour with the fans and the result is exactly as promised, it's literally achieved nothing.
Or...maybe he just wants to go and play at Chelsea?
C'mon guys, stop always defending footballers and blaming agents for everything.

Omg make it happen. Dont even need to be winning

Can't wait to be 3-0 up at home to Chelsea in September and listening to Goodison singing:

"We don't care too much for money, cause money can't buy you Stones.... can't buy you stooo-oones, can't buy you stooo-oones"

It won't be. Stones has another year left with us, two at the most. Chelsea's willingness to part with 40 million will be like a beacon to a lot of other big clubs. Let's not kid ourselves, we can make him stay because there's a few years left on his contract, he won't be signing any new ones.

Like you know. Utter tosh.

Martinez is hell bent on keeping Stones as he genuinely believes this core group, with some additional players can not only win domestic trophies but push on and possibly qualify for top 4 etc.. If that was to happen I put it to you the Stones, Barkleys etc.. could very well be signing new contracts.

Ultimately and like always, results will play a big bearing on what does and doesn't happen in the future.

Agree. Though, being at the day tonight I can say confidently that he has not fallen out of favour with the majority of the fanbase. He shouldn't have handed the request in - and whoever has persuaded him to do it (my guess his agent) has a lot to answer for. Martinez coming out really strong on this. Hoping against hope we stick to our values and stay resilient.
