John Stones transfer saga

I fail to see how we are in a strong position here. We have a player who doesn't want to play for our club, whose mind is all set on playing for another club. Other teams now know that he isn't committed to the cause. Think Joleon Lescott against Arsenal and that gives you an example of a player who isn't committed and whose head is elsewhere. Other teams will know Everton will be looking to get rid ASAP and so i doubt we will likely see anything over 35m.

We're in a strong position because of the simple fact that Stones is on a long-term contract. He can protest as much as he likes but unless Chelsea meet our valuation, we're under no pressure to sell.

The difference is that Lescott was really just an ordinary player who saw a once in a lifetime opportunity to get the big bucks. Stones knows that if he doesn't move this year he may well do next year and I don't believe he would want to kick up a big fuss. We should put out a statement saying that he is not moving for a penny under £50M and that is the end of it.........

Really think the board have orchestrated it, to be honest.

Charlie Adam's quotes say it all. Stones is not the type in my opinion and the way he's played recently illustrates this. The board would rather have £30-£40m than a centre back. Or any individual. But they can't cope with a big scandal, so turning everyone against the lad is a lot easier.
You can't listen to Charlie Adam. He said the situation between Stirling and stones was totally different and then explained why the situation was the same!! The board haven't orchestrated this, Chelsea/press have.

No he wasn't. He was very good for us and played a big part in City's first title win.

What in the hell are you talking about?

He's a moron, no doubt, but I think he's right that transfer requests are often orchestrated.

Anyone who thinks our board wouldn't do this gives them more credit than they deserve.

So based on your view of what should happen next, all those fine words from Martinez about building a team for the future, Stones, Barkley, Lukaku are empty platitudes.

Either Martinez believed what he has being saying and has been shafted by the Board or Stones, or Martinez is complicit in the whole deception.

Either way it would be highly unsatisfactory and would speak volumes of a malaise that exists within our club.

The only way Everton can emerge with any credit and credibility is to deny the request. They don't have to go public with the denial they just need to get on with the rest of their transfer business and tell Stones to prepare for Spurs on Saturday.

I dont see how that follows. In my view, Martinez has the strategy of trying to build a new team on the basis of younger players. But he has to be realistic that the industry will cut across that at times. It doesn't negate the plan. It just throws a spanner in the works - it's something he'll have known could happen on occasion (indeed he constantly refers to the interest of other teams in our players, and that's one small step away from offloading one every now and again). My gripe is that this hasn't been wrapped up a month or more ago - and also that, given that it wasn't, the board needed to sanction at least some cash to get the ball rolling on that transfer hit list we have outwith any incoming cash for Stones.

As for Everton denying his transfer request to retain credibility: maybe they will, but it'll be a pyrrhic victory. Two things will happen: 1/ we'll go with what we have, to coin a phrase. There'll be no marquee signings of players who can give us creativity; 2/ we'll be stuck with a disgruntled player (and even if he got his head down and grafted away he'll be a run of poor form away from being hounded at this club. This club's fans wont accept what he did. Not a chance).

Totally agree Dave

While he was here he was also loved by the fans and had an excellent goal return for a defender, too.

Lescott was quality for us, arguably even better than Jags in his prime. Anything else is complete revisionism. Makes me laugh when the English media blamed his lack of mobility as to why he wasn't partnering Terry for the England team. This was when Lescott was rampaging down the flank for us and Terry was hardly 'mobile'. Him and Jags' omission from the 2010 World Cup team was absolutely scandalous as an injured Ledley King, a retired Carragher and flavour of the month Matt Upson went instead of two of the top English centreback a at the time.

The problem we have is that we couldn't keep Stones even if the board wasn't partly behind it because Stones and his agent knows we have no one who could come in and replace him in the first team, they have us over a barrel with that and that's partly down to Martinez.

I've said it from the start Martinez should send Mori back on his way to Argentina and get Van Dijk or Evans in, someone who Stones and his agent would know could come in and keep Stones out the team If he kicked up a fuss if we said he's staying put, they know full well some Jarg argie defender isn't gonna go straight into the starting 11.

Anyone who thinks our board COULD do this perhaps gives them more credit than they deserve :D
