It would have been a lot brighter as a scenario if it'd have been done weeks ago. Of course, the plan though is to do it as late as possible in order to retain as much of the incoming cash as they can get away with.
Mark my words: the tv cash plus what they siphon away from any Stones sale will disappear (with vague mutterings about cash for January buys and their friends in the media implying that monies are being saved for a new stadium scheme).

The problem is mate, clubs can see that now. They know we need the money in early to do our business so try wait until the final moment to offer the full amount, as they think they can get him for say 75% of the fee if they move early. It must be widely known now. Chelsea, City and Manchester United all adopt the same tactics as do Arsenal.
The Lescott situation is spot on really. Money isn't everything and despite getting a very good deal for Lescott the following season was mucked up by us losing him. 24 million was a poor substitute.
It always made me laugh when people slagged Moyes off for buying Heitinga, Distin and Billy with the money. It showed a complete misunderstanding of how challenging it is to buy in decent players at this late stage of the window. No doubt when Martinez buys whoever he does, they are far less likely to work out, as we are taking caste offs in a hasty minded manner. It is easy to blame the manager (Moyes then, or Martinez now) but it's a lot harder to look at the broader picture.
What worries me most as I've said is the impact this will have on our manager. Moyes was never the same after the Lescott affair and almost gave up.
If we keep Stones I am more than happy to eat my hat but we will see. What is obviously not helping is the reluctance to release any funds for Martinez giving him, the fans and everyone else outside of the club the idea we can't sign anyone until we sell Stones. That may well not be the case. But some sort of statement should be coming out.
The sad thing to me is that we are driving young managers to the point of giving up a bit. Martinez (and Moyes before him) were hardly David O'Leary at Leeds. They just wanted a similar level of backing to sides around us, Stoke, West Ham etc. Look at what a player Payet looks currently. If your worst predictions come true, we sell Stones and don't bring anyone in of substance Martinez will be left with two options. 1) Resign. Or Option 2) Keep his mouth shut and get on with it. If he takes option 2 he will have a job for life like his predecessor.
