2015 post UK election discussion

That's some claim after the scare mongering tactics used in the election campaign, pitching nation against nation and economic class against economic class.

Jim Murphy felt this type of politics from the ScotsNats first hand and he didn't seem impressed either. There is a line and elements of some parties just take it too far. You live in London, you know what the various remembrance events mean to a great many of a generation who fought for our freedoms. To vandalise a memorial is nothing short of a disgrace.......

That's our system though and for the flaws it has, it also allows us to have genuine constituency MPs who represent us at a local level on the national stage. That's really important. Its also the reason why UKIP only won one seat. We need to be careful what we wish for.

Such as, a fair democracy.

Didn't see any protests when Blair won a large majority with 35.2% of the vote.

Funny that the left only care about voting reform when they don't win.

Oh, and also, interestingly enough, PR would have resulted in a Tory/UKIP coalition. Lovely!

It wasn't an anti-Tory win in 2015 sleight as such just a general observation. The same situation was true in 2001 and 2005. This time, 15m people didn't vote for whatever reason and of those who did, 63.2% didn't want a Tory govt. That can't be healthy.

PR would not necessarily have resulted in a Tory/UKIP coaliton because a different electoral system would have been in place. Apples and pears, eh?

First past the post is a bit [Poor language removed], but for some reason it works well in the UK and most of the time, produces stable and moderate governments.

I started visiting Ypres in 1981. Until the mid 90's, you would have been hard pressed to spot a coach of British tourists. I don't understand (and I say this as one keen to learn) the British idea of Remembrance. Do you think it helps the dead of 100 years ago? Does waving British Legion flags help their spouses or children?

Have a look at Sassoon's poem about the Menin Gate and reflect.

I'd prefer that people who have a political gripe didn't desecrate the dead but I am largely unmoved at protestations about national identity from people whose dedication starts and ends with a 50p donation once a year.

And put like that it's fine, but maybe you should read some of the comments with that same approach.....

It's an emotional time, Pete. You know that..

Seriously, though, you people trying to fathom why we of the Left are despairing, watch this:

Feel free to lambast it as much as you want afterewards - I'm hoping it will generate interesting discussion!
