Lumpy from Seaforth - ex Japanese POW. Apparently he escaped from captivity and walked without food or water for 30 days before being re-captured.

He used to just walk all day and night around Seaforth, Waterloo and Bootle. Social Services bought him a dog as they thought it would be company for him on his daily walkathons, but he walked the paws off it and ended up being prosecuted for animal cruelty!

All the kids used to chase him and he used to shout "You'll never catch me"!

What was his story? Used to see him everywhere...

Lived in Crosby and used to frequent in Southport, Chester and town (as well as in Islington) with a big cardboard poster about not smoking. He often walked a bicycle round too.

I heard his Missus died in a house fire related to a cigarette. If so, very sad, but can't verify that.
