I think 1990, 1996, 2002 and 2004 were all honestly tournaments england had a chance of winning.

In 2 of them they lost semi finals on penalties to the eventual winner, which is not a million miles off.

I mean don't get me wrong in 2010, 2012 and 2014 england couldn't have won the tournament if everybody else had suddenly fallen down dead but I think there's a bit of national rivalry colouring your thoughts here.

I think it's obvious that you have a bit of personal dislike for england fans.

Well, that being the case the main thing people remember about Gazza in an England shirt is the tears he cried after realising he was going to miss the semi final of Italia '90 after picking up a stupid booking.

And then they remember the sitter he missed in extra time of the Euro '96 semi.

Rooney?

When he calls it a day the two most remembered things about his international career will be how he played in Euro '04.....and the fact that he is England's all time leading scorer (unless sommat awful happens and his career is ended prematurely before he breaks the record).

When you start comparing Gazza to Wayne at international level it doesn't end well for the Geordie :(

I personally don't understand how being consistently ranked in the top 10 international teams in the biggest global sport in the world makes you crap at it. New Zealand is ranked 98, that's crap.

Do you now? Based on what? It's telling you say "England fans" rather than the England team itself.

You're completely wrong, but that's not stopped anyone before from spouting utterly stupid guff.

There's nothing wrong with national rivalry but when you go on a rant about how england fans always claim bad luck to cover their team's failures and it's laughable and stupid you don't get to call yourself impartial, is all.

I mean I can understand it. God knows I hate the french and all that.

I think the thing is like we're ok mocking ourselves but when someone from outsdie that group come in and starts mocking you, however light hearted it might be intended, it can't help but read a little nastier.

And you're not helping yourself with patronizing comments like that first sentence.

Not that I can't understand why you'd dislike england fans, I know the nazi stuff must get very old.
 
This started about having a giggle at Utds expense. But with the temperature rising, and being mega off topic now, temp lock to let everyone have a quiet cup of tea.

BTW, there is a Rooney thread, and the discussion about Englands record at tournaments is an interesting one. Worth a thread of its own maybe.
