It looks as thought RM has said "Look boys, take it easy, we'll do the hard work on the training ground".

Commentators were saying it was pretty hard going in pre-season.

I'd rather we won the games but I'm more concerned about the lack of evidence that our first XI is fit and ready to go:

Howard (not much activity) Robles (hmm, the less said the better)
Coleman (seemingly not fit), Hibbo (no comment)
Jags (hardly had any time on the pitch)
Distin or Stones (Stones has looked particularly edgy)
Baines (so-so but only getting 45 mins here or there)

Mirallas - not seen so far
Barkley - ok-ish
Besic - ok so far
Pienaar, Osman, Gibson, Barry, McCarthy - hit and miss generally
McGeady - hopefully not starting.
Oviedo (no sign of a return)
Atsu (not active)

Lukaku - nowhere to be seen
Naismith - ok
Kone - stuck on the M62 somewhere

But at least the youngsters look hungry.

So key personnel - Jags, Mirallas, Lukaku in particular are just not ready it would seem.

The worrying thing is that Everton are only ever two games away from full meltdown for many of you who post in the match threads.

Poor Roberto doesn't stand a chance really. Think back to the away game last season with that beaut having a go at Distin? Or the derby, Spurs and Chelsea defeats. Some of you were almost taking perverse delight in how it was all going to come crashing down and how Martinez et all had messed up.

It's as frustrating at the lids who post about Everton going to win the league and have the best midfield ever ever. It's sound to have a reasoned opinion somewhere in the middle, it's usually more accurate you'll find too.

Save the bell comments for twitter and try and keep the match threads a reasonable experience for most on here.

are you serious we dont look capable of winning against anyone barry has been tripe baines shocking hibbert a joke jags hardly been seen pienaar been injured

Ok, Are you suggesting that the squad of players that achieved our highest points total in over two decades have after 2 months off turned into a bad side?

Usually you can see what has been worked on during pre season, fitness, sharpness, stamina, team play, something usually stands out while the others look to need the edges rounding off

This pre season however, I am still looking.....

working on what on the training pitch though ? apart from about 15 minutes in the second half against celta vigo , our standard of football hasn't been out of first gear all pre season.
I'm talking about a lot of running and knowing RM mostly with the ball. It's difficult to play a precise passing game when the legs are shot.

its only pre season and lads say Roberto knows who in and who's out, the thing i am worried
about is why is hibbert being picked each game, i know coleman is out but sure to god Stones or Browning should be bed in at right back, if hibbo starts next weekend we will get our arse hand to us, Barkley's not pulling up any trees either, and its a joke that Mirallas and Lukaku
are not fit for the season start, for god sake didn't they just come home from the world cup.
so what it means is Mirallas and Lukaku were not fit at the world cup.

How can you possible know how fit the players are and that goes for stamina

They could be getting hammered in training and have been told to take it easy in the games to avoid injury and fatigue

Nobody including myself has one clue what is going on at the club regarding training and preparation

....the World Cup was an extension to last season. The lads who went were given time off. They needed it. That means they need a pre-season but they are some way off the players who have been in for a month. They will be looked at and managed with the season in mind, not the first game. We have a tough start and I can't see the Belgian lads making the Leicester game. Coleman wont be fit either, so it will be tough.

I still reckon we'll see some shape come the start of the season. Lots of rotation and minutes for the majority of the players, preparing them for match action without going 'gung-ho' on any particular aspect. We're definitely preparing for a marathon and not a sprint here.

You only have to see how cautious Martinez has been over Coleman, Garbutt, Gibson, Jags, Lukaku & Mirallas. The former two he's dropped completely after niggles meaning he wants to completely rule out the possibility of bringing them back before they're feeling 110% again. The latter two he wants to give a very decent break as they both played a large chunk of Belgium's run up to the QF of the WC. He's fearing that by January we could be in a position where we might end up with a couple injuries off the back of playing in 4 competitions and fatigue will end up setting in worse than it did at the beginning of this year.

I hope that if a 'behind-closed-doors' friendly does happen through the week that the Belgs will get some minutes under their belts and that we use it to refine our shape going into the Leicester game. Reckon we could (& should) be looking a lot better by Saturday.
