My dad said he was our best ever left back

...I'd say your Dad was right. I was fortunate enough to watch a lot of him and he was a class act. Widely recognised as the best LB in the world at his peak (ahead of West Germany's Karl Schnellinger). My memory is that he would often trap a ball, take a step or two back and then run up and strike as though he was hitting a free kick. Like all those special players, they seem to have more time than mere mortals.

I think he spent the majority of his career at Huddersfield,we signed him when he was about 29/30,four great years with us though,my old man reckoned he was the mutts nuts as well, our world cup winner, legend!!

Your dad is spot on. I remember him putting in a 5 yard leaping tackle on one poor winger, won the ball, tidied up and back to attack. A pure class act.......we'll be very lucky if we, and England, ever see his like again.......

Ray Wilson fell on top of me at West Bromwich Albion. It was my first away game and my dad had taken me, think I was about 12 or so and Ray flew into a tackle and slid off the pitch, on to the track and on to me and my dad - we were sat in the first row. Once Everton (or in my case Ray Wilson) touches you...

He never took his eye off the ball. As soon as the winger touched it he was tackled. Best left back I've ever seen. World Class.

If people think Leighton Baines is good in that position, (Which he undoubtably is), Ray was probably a fair few street way ahead of him. He was cultured. I was priveleged to have seen him play.

I watched Ray Wilson play for us through all his 5 years and for me I have never seen a better left back at Goodison the man oozed class it is only a shame that he never won the league with us.
