To add to the above, point being made is to call Mohammed a pedophile and utterly ignore the social context of the time and the other rampant examples of the exact same thing scattered through Christianity, Judaism, etc. etc. is hypocritical in the extreme.

Ok, I checked and you're right...most sources say 9 or 10 at the time of consummation.

I think Nik's point is that from his POV, he's seeing a religion based on a man with one openly-known case of sexual paraphilia. But as you say, he's wilfully ignoring the historical context.

And what does it mean when some practice bizarre sex? Even today Muslims in countries like Afghanistan practice sex like you wouldn't believe! I've heard some outrageous stuff from people who've been there: sex parties where men doll up an adolescent boy to look like a girl then take him from all angles in a mass group orgy. Apparently it's an honour for the boy to be chosen for this.

But what does this tell us about Islam? Very little. Just as little as the extremes of behaviour we hear about from parts of the Christian world tells us about the billion people of the planet Earth who believe in the bible.

The definition of agenda is to focus on just negative aspects of something which are easy to argue against (having sex with a 9-year old girl is emotively an easy target, as are suicide bombers).

This is the problem with this debate...there's no nuance.

And no nuance means I'm out.

My grasp of religion is sketchy at best, especially since it is basically a load of different ideas that will not ever be proved right or wrong.

But I didnt know that Jesus's dad was St Peter. I thought is was Joseph, or at least Mary was married to Joseph.

And Dan Brown didnt mention any of that ffs!
I'll add you a curveball, it is highly unlikely that her 'name' was 'Mary', 'Mary' is a translation of a title that represented the daughter of a serving rabbi in one of the Jewish sects, a tradition brought back from the exile in Egypt

Christ.

I happen to think its all a load of cobblers if I am honest. A load of fairy stories written when paper was invented to make some sense of the world. All religions basically say the same thing, but then get into rows about what to eat, what to drink, when to do either, etc etc etc.

Not anti it or anything, just think if you live your life in an ok way, and there is a God, then you will be ok. The rest is just tripe.

Because otherwise, no one ever went to heaven, or hell, if they lived before paper was invented, and that would be wrong, cos God loves us all. Apparently.

Bollocks... Typo, meant Saint Joseph xD

For me the integration of different faith, cultures and identities is a little over-rated. It's also fraught with tensions in most areas where this has happened. I've got no problem with any of it but my opinion is that for every area where there's harmony and understanding there's three where tensions are high.

I believe in something but it is my something, and I could never expect anyone else to understand, how could they, they haven't lived my life.
I love the idea of spirituality, but the confines of organised religions use their power for materialistic gain and sod the punters.
Before paper each tribe would elect someone who would have to learn all the histories and remember them and pass them on, this way the story stayed the same. Add paper and travel and translating and trade and commerce and you end up with Christmas :)

Its a bit like when you look at another clubs forum isnt it? Straight away it looks and feels different to GOT. Not better or worse, but different.

If you register, and post, you quickly realise their quirks, and what they are like, and if you respect that, you will be ok as a guest poster.

Obviously GOT is the superior footie forum of all time though.

So religion is footie forums really.

Exactly. GOT being Buddhism obviously.
