I was told at school that the X came from the first letter of the Greek spelling of Christ, and was part of an early christian symbol for Christ. Christmas or Xmas are both shortened versions of 'a mass for Christ'.

Today many use Xmas to celebrate the 25th of December without refering to the Christian celebration, some see the spelling as crossing out Christ.

Each to their own, without getting into the debate on faith/non faith, both forms should be acceptable from both perspectives.

Xmas should be banned off the face of Earth. This is the time of year that puts families in dept till summer. I'm not a Jovy but I dont like it because of the commercialism. Spend hundreds of my hard earned on other people and get very little back in return. Them Germans have a lot to answer for.
