It's due to people like Dave Hickson that people feel so close to Everton, they make it so much more than just a football club. Rest In Peace

Another great quote at 1:42 here, "I've been to a few clubs, great clubs, Aston Villa, Huddersfield, Liverpool - but Everton, there's something magic about it. I'm just an Evertonian, that's all."

Kenwright's statement:

I have had many idols in my life but only one true hero.

Dave Hickson made me an Evertonian. More than anyone, or anything, he was responsible week in, week out for me making the journey by bus and tram to Goodison Park. As a somewhat timid seven-year-old he gave me the courage to dare.

In the eyes of my generation of Blues, Dave was a colossus. In my seven-year-old eyes he was simply the greatest centre-forward on the planet. In my 67th year on that planet I am still of that opinion.

Thank-you 'Cannonball Kid' for the Inspiration.

Love always, Bill.

verton captain Phil Jagielka has paid tribute to Dave Hickson.

“Dave was always a friendly face at Goodison Park and he loved watching the team,” he said.

“There are many people who knew him better than me but he would come into the dressing room after games to take our Man of the Match into the lounges and he loved being amongst the lads.

“He was clearly an immensely popular person with everyone at Goodison and the supporters idolised him. He was a legend and always will be.

“On behalf of all the players at Everton I’d like to send our sympathy to the family. It’s a desperately sad time for all of us here at the club but even more so for his family.”

A number of Dave's former teammates and friends have also been recalling their memories of the Everton Giant.

Derek Temple said: "I was Dave's inside-forward and he was a very, very good footballer. I got a few goals as his partner as he would take the knocks for me to score the goals. He'll be sadly missed."

John Sutherland paid this tribute: "Dave was a very good player, he always got stuck in and was a trier who never gave up. Everton always meant so much to him."

Kenny Birch, another teammate, said: "He was a gentle giant. He could play football with the best of them and he could play the rough stuff if it needed to be played. He will be greatly missed."

Jimmy Harris, who took over from Dave when he first left the club, recalled: "Dave was the centre-forward I took over from and when he came back I moved to the wing. We struck up a good playing relationship. He was a head down very strong very direct sort of player."

RIP from all sides of Mersyside

I think it would be appropriate to have some sort of tribute 1st home game of the season

Rest in Peace - I remember as a little boy my granddad telling me of your performance against Manchester United in the Cup in 1953.

R.I.P Dave Hickson, wasn't around when he was playing for us, but with what my dad told me and the stories a couple of posters here have mentioned, he's a legend, once again, R.I.P

Very sad about Dave Hickson - a genuinely lovely man. He never even realised that the best thing about the stadium tour was his company.

Did the goodison tour a few years back when we were waiting around for a champions league game at anfield,he was a really sound man, chatted away to us and we had a bit of craic with him in evertons trophy room,he was really down to earth. He forgot to take the admission money from us at the start of the tour so we went back to him at the end and give him the money and he shook our hands and said fair play lads you could have done a runner!thoughts are with his family.YNWA
