In terms of technical ability he's miles better than anichebe
in terms of work ethic he's severely lacking, although admittedly he's improved recently. Some 4 years ago when the american press were still trying to figure out what football was, they were piling praise onto him without realizing that his one trick was to beat his defender once the ball was sent long and hope they miscued the first header.
To be honest, old altidore would have been ideal for a David Moyes team. New Altidore, who seems to actually be interested in helping out with buildup play, and is capable of distributing the ball, might fit in well with a Martinez team.
I really don't want to join the ranks of pro-altidore americans. He was my single least favorite player in the american national set up for a long time, I remember looking at several games where tim howard had more touches on the ball than him and we still won on stat-tracker websites.
The only reason I would want him is because he apparently had a great season (I didn't see a single game he played in so can't judge) with his club, and because he's looked superb for the national team in the last couple games.
If we do sign him, be ready for another yak, which honestly, if the price is right, I would be okay with.
