All Is Not Forgiven

They're absolutely supposed to be psychologists mate , I'm no Harry redknapp fan but he doesn't coach at all really he's a motivator but spurs finished fourth . I'll get it wrong but there was a clough quote a player revealed that said (something like ) " it's not about telling them how to trap a ball if they couldn't trap a ball they wouldn't be at this level it's about telling The lad to get his hair cut" .

Football management is about interaction

You're clutching at straws mate. Redknapp had a squad of players worthy of 4th spot. Proved again this season at Spurs. I don't understand where you're going with this. We both agree that it's a collective game managers and players. However The people who have the final say are the players.

The motivation should come from wanting to win a trophy. Regardless of what the manager tells you.

I'm honestly not clutching mate , we'll take moyes out if the debate if you like as its emotive . Managers are supposed to be psychologists , sports scientists , marriage guidance councillors everything a lot of the best regarded hardly coach at all .

I'll give you an example do you remember that ferguson presser when he kicked off at the journo who asked about Higgs and he'd left his mic on by 'mistake' ? People I spoke to were convinced he knew it was on and knew what he was doing all about building the mentality . If manager motivation didn't work how do you explain a new manager 'bounce ' ? So many managers can do that little 10 game bounce then the players bore and performances drop .

I won't disagree that the players are a huge part of it but the mentality starts at the manager look at the slump in form after Keegan and his "I'd love it " or Rafael and his "facht" and compare to mourinho going our and taking the boos from barca fans to massively relieve the pressure on his lads .

Motivation, especially in the cup should come from within the players. It's called desire. They didn't show up. That's how I see it. Moyes has proved he can motivate.

I think that's interesting to look at as there is no doubt in my mind the RS team motivated themselves for the cup games and generally didn't bother to turn up for league games and was viewed as a failing of the manager .

Players need motivating more than ever nowadays due to the hefty wage they pick up at the end of the week. Motivation has to start with the manager as that is a large part of his job. If the players are not showing motivation during a game then the manager has a duty to do something about it or he is failing the club. Against Wigan I don't know if it was down to motivation or Moyes just picked the wrong team, either way it is all down to the manager. His players he bought his players that he trains and if he sees lack of interest or motivation or even poor form then he has a duty to the Club and supporters to do managing.

Think sheeds has won on points.

I whole heartedly disagree with that comment. Moyes can not take full blame for that dire performance.

Even though i loved every moment of yesterdays game i still couldnt help but think if we had done that last weekend we would be on our way to wembley

Agree with you on this, Moyes could of come out said I made hot love to the entire family of every player, and then ate their dogs as his build up speech, i'd still expect the players motivation to be higher than what it was for a quarter final at Goodison against Wigan.

The players were at least 95% to blame, but they are getting away with it in favor of blaming Moyes build up speech, this apparently being the reason 11 players couldn't perform at home, against Wigan, in a quarter final, with Wembley as the next game..

Personally I am sure we would all struggle to lift ourselves under those conditions without at least a Braveheart level speech.. Martinez clearly went full independence day on his.. We had no chance...
The poor players, going out there without the motivation speech needed for such a big game, clearly they were just going to wonder around like sheep without purpose, they have no idea how important a trip to Wembley is unless Moyes makes it completely clear, obviously assuming this game was a friendly as it wasn't on the league calendar.

I've in no way exonerated the players but if the manager doesn't motivate who does ? Of course the players should be motivated without the manager but it doesnt mean the manager shouldn't bother to do it .

I am sure he gave words of encouragement before hand, but there is no way even with no manager at all that the players showed an acceptable amount of fight, even if it had to come from them entirely.
They simply didn't turn up, Moyes can only do so much and even if he was a drain on the moral during these games then when they get over that line, stand there at the start waiting for the whistle, surely what this means must go through their heads.. Would it not yours?

If the manager is not responsible for the players mental approach then who is? Things like Wigan last week have happened too often in important matches during his tenure. All very well us beating City with the pressure off and nothing left to play for. In the important matches we come up short. The buck for that stops with the manager.

I take it he only deserves 5% of the credit if we win a cup then?
