Anyone explain when and why the apparent zonal marking on set-pieces kicked in at Everton, or give a good account of the technicalities of it (maybe the guy who does the executioners blog frequents here and he can help)?

Ive been going for almsot 30 years and if I'm being totally honest, despite being a football officiando, it simply hadnt occured to me that we (mal)practised it this season at least.....I picked up on it by chance reading something the mightily consistent Sylvain Distin wrote. Now, to cover my blushes of ignorance, if you can assist....fire away.

Thanks in advance

Distin said after the Villa game that Benteke didn't come into his defensive area and as a result he couldn't switch with Heitinga ....who clearly struggled with his strength. I can't make any sense of why we would employ that way of defending.

What, for corners or general play?

Either way, another example of not spotting an obvious problem during the actual match and acting to remedy it.

Zonal marking works.. as long as your players don't fall asleep and stay concentrated. Oh and your players not being gash at defending in the air is a big factor too.

Zonal marking falls on its arse when the attacking side withdraws its biggest threats to the edge of the box. If you get a 6ft plus striker running & attacking the ball up against a defender who is static defending his zone then there's only one winner when the corner arrives

Benteke had the sense to go & stand with Heitinga which meant Distin would have had to double up on him leaving some else free
