2025/26 Charly Alcaraz

Really good at carrying the ball and really not good at making the right decision at the end of a run. It's why he's a 15m player and not 50m.
Said this after I'd first watched him...

I've not really changed my mind. He carries the ball well, but that's about it for me.

I'm not really having him as a player, but I will accept (having changed my mind) that if we are insisting on playing a 4231 then he's really the only viable number 10 we have. KDH and Rohl are both number 8s and we should 100% be changing the shape we play to reflect that.

….i think it’s obvious that KDH offers a lot more on the pitch than Alcaraz. Alcaraz is very poor out of possession, he’s a ball watcher. I was listening to an interview with Cunha who was saying he needs to do a lot more work out of possession as a modern day no10 than he has.

KDH is all over the pitch, basically he’s another CM when we lose possession. He can get behind the opposition back four and make a block on the edge of his own box.

Alcaraz was terrific in that 2nd half against Palace. He turned the game but we were chasing a result. He’s as good a transition player we have, amazed he didn’t make that pass last night because he’s terrific in those situations.

I guess that’s why Moyes and Dyche were/are reluctant to start him.
KDH is bypassed constantly so I just don’t really get these takes. I guess he’s trying to do the right thing so we’re just counting it? Alcaraz has the work rate and maybe it’s just the fact that Moyes wants to be compact so often that is mostly at issue. When we open it up and press Alcaraz is much more capable.

We don't press effectively enough at the moment and it's such an important part of the game. As soon as Sunderland started pressing we had no idea how to compete with them. The old adage pressing starts from the front is right. Alcaraz would give us that. KDH a bit deeper with Rohl and Alcaraz in the 10 has to be worth a go.

He presses well individually when we’re chasing a game but he’s got no positional discipline off the ball. A bit like Tim as well. Both good options if we’re expected to be in the ascendancy or chasing a game. Not starters every game.

Positional discipline is just super super overrated in the modern game
