2025/26 James Garner

I don't understand how contract discussions haven't taken place. Good luck to him if he chooses to weigh up his options now.

We got this a couple of weeks back. He might not have heard anything but sounds like we’re definitely offering one.

He is the only player (save for Michael Keane possibly) who has a longish range shot in him. He and KDH should swap positions at times.

I agree, but he's also the best holding midfielder we have, so we're hamstrung by the weakness of the squad. All the other midfielders - Gana, KHD, Rohl - are all "buzzers" rather than "sitters" aren't they, at their best when pushing up the pitch a bit, pressing the opposition and trying to force mistakes, rather than getting on the ball deep and knocking it around. Jimmy G can do a bit of both, but we needed to buy someone to allow him to be able to push up more. According to Paddy at the Athletic, Joao Palhinha who went to Spurs was one of the players Moyesy wanted most and that makes complete sense - although it's baffling that the first two players we tried to sign in the summer appear to have been a number 6 and a number 2 (Kenny Tete) and we ended up going into the season with neither. Bit of a scattergun transfer process that has left us pretty unbalanced.

Garner's a steady eddie. One of those solid 6 or 7/10 types pretty much every game. Will rarely attempt a stupid pass to give the ball away and will keep the play ticking over.

Fine with giving him a new 3 year deal as he's the sort who'd be a good squad player if the club can sign some better CMs over next two or three windows. From what I've seen so far Rohl isn't that.

I keep thinking we'll see him at RB soon but in six weeks time Gana goes to AFCON and KDH will probably get 10 yellows at some point in December and be out for two games so in that situation you stick with your next experienced midfielder in that position unless Moyes is just going to roll with a Rohl-Tim pivot which would feel a massive gamble if the league position isn't great.

Needs to play as single sitter rather than in a double pivot with a partner who just chases the ball all over the pitch. Teams just isolate our right back knowing Garner needs to come across and it vacates the entire midfield because Gueye was off chasing the ball.

Alcaraz does have a propensity to sky his long shots and I think that Garner is probably the best. I was thinking more in any event of Garner and KDH swapping more in game as Moyes does not appear to like Alcaraz much. I think that KDH was exposed last weekend as Moyes didn't bring Alcaraz on sooner.

Having an almost blank canvas was seen as a positive but could it have worked the other way.

1. We had a relatively limited amount of cash or PSR headroom but we were very short of numbers.
2. Tete and in particular other free agents (we possibly don't know who) would have allowed us to be more strategic but we failed to sign them.
3. Barry, Aznou and Dibling are positive signings but are not at the level that we require now.
4. We were at the back of the queue because of recent league positions.

I think that we knew who we wanted, but most would not join us unless we broke the bank. In the end I think that we went for whoever was available.

The net effect is that whilst we had a blank canvas there are only two new regular starters in the team one of which is on loan. Nobody thought that Keane would be a regular starter.

At present it looks like a failed transfer window but the key issue for me is whether we have room for signings in January 2025. The best that we can say about the transfer window is that we haven't spent a ridiculous amount on players who will have no sell on value.

This thread kills me, so i have to keep away or try to ignore what I read, but when I see a poster who see's what i do in Garner, they get my love 💙

Garner is the heartbeat of our team.
His best qualities are undermined by his alround ability to fill positions that we have failed in recruiting.

A new contract better be top of the agenda soon, or something is seriously going wrong behind the scenes.

Absolutely, I’m baffled by the interview with Henry Winter in which he says he’s heard nothing. Infact, it seems a reasonable assumption that his management team has set up that interview purely to flag up his contractual situation to interested parties and try and encourage us to get our act together.

I think there's sometimes a bit of a disconnect between what a player means when they say they've not heard anything and what we think they're describing. I don't know in his case obviously but I think often players will be talking about an actual formal offer a contract, not the general negotiation around it which they just leave up to their agent. The same thing happened in the summer with some of those who left, it was clear that there had been discussions about the possibility of them signing new deals but no deal was formally offered to some of them because it was clear from the discussions that what we were willing to give them and what they were happy to accept weren't anywhere near matching up.
