Always seem to be that they were a Manchester band that refused to be Manchester'd, which probably made it hard for them during that time even though it was clearly the right thing to do

They came up with and sounded a bit like Joy Division early on, labeled punk/funk.

Does the sound quality of the songs matter much? If not, you could use a YouTube ripper
