Its always been like this, we see it more these days because people have a platform to spout off crap that in the past would have stayed in their tiny little minds instead. To be honest it’s difficult when you open facebook (I know, my mistake for opening that cesspit) and as soon as the news are up the majority of the comments are “wonder where he’s from”, “vote reform”, and “funny” comments about immigrants and skin colour.
It’s absolutely infuriating, and as someone on the left I don’t even know what a realistic solution to stop the deepening of this sentiment is anymore. It feels like it all is out of control and like no rationality is left, and if there is any, it doesn’t work to bridge the divide.
After all is said and done, left or right, it’s the palpable lack of empathy in all these discussions that is scary. There are families, on this occasion, literally next door, who are in a state of panic right now, and about to have their lives changed. My own daughter was going to go down there tonight but fortunately changed her mind at the last minute.
We live in deeply concerning times.
Most people are sound by and large but there will always be a large group of complete knobs.
