I heard a suggestion that bikes used by naughty members of the public could be seized and melted down, possibly into a big gallows or guillotine.

"The government estimates that of 1,600 deaths on UK roads last year, four were caused by cyclists."

Tell me why a cyclist they may cause a road accident or even on a cycle path to a member of the public & are exempt of basic insurance cover for anyone injured?
Modern bikes down hill can exceed the speed limit no differences between a motorbike imo !

Alright, sound, who's gonna police it?

Like any accident you follow the protocol of after an road teaffic accident of exchanging insurance details - if its serious- the police become involved as per usual it also protects the cyclists also atm its ridiculous as per Wales where the motorists complaining about cyclists overtaking them- added to that a cyclists should pass a more detailed basic road test & pay for an ID licence - this could be carried out by Halfords or any other top cycle shops-
Are limit 18 above - the modern bicycle has come on leaps & bounds with modern technology its just basic road safety they should not be exempt Imo !

I think the mighty plod have enough on their hands already, banned drivers, drink drivers, not insured drivers, unqualified drivers, oap's that can't see, car thieves, ringers, speedsters, fly tippers, chop shops, cloners, fraudulent particulars, fake id's, reflective number plates, smart motorways, people in peril, unfit vehicles, joyriders, prime ministers not wearing a seat belt...

You want to put how many more millions of journeys into the hands of an already over stretched constabulary topped up by halfords?

Lets not forget how such powers might end up being used for discrimination, like how 'stop and search' has been used to terrorise certain communities in the cities. How long before some 12 year old kid frightened of the pigs is chased out into the road under the wheels of a lorry? I'm not really sure you've thought all this through. Sounds great, sounds brilliant, perfection personified, but in the real world...

The police never seem understaffed where the highway code practices are concerned - most accidents are sorted by the two insured parties in most events - like me many motorists have dash cams & I have seen cyclists using them too!
Why should a car/ motorcyclist be compulsory insured by law when another road user on the same road does not
I also think caravans should pay extra road tax & be insured too..

So you fully back pedestrians requiring a licence and insurance for travelling in the same areas?

I think Joey’s experiences at the hands of the Jersey Gardening Gestapo has tarnished him for life.

If Joey had his way, you’d be having to present a licence to prove you can walk and valid insurance, each time you went into JD to buy a pair of trainers.

I nearly got run over by a Lycra nutter on his fancy bike doing over 50 miles an hour with a cycle path only 6 yards away yelled at him just got a two finger salute
