The Now-Irrelevant 2024/25 Relegation Battle (Without Everton!)

….its a good point. I looked at Leicester’s half full stadium last night and immediately thought of Goodison and the welcoming parade of the coach, the blue smoke, the atmosphere when we had to fight for our top flight existence.

Our fan base gets a bit of stick, even on here but I wouldn’t swap them for any other, just look at the traffic on this site and we haven’t seen success in an age.
This is why we are still a big club even though the results haven't shown it for a long time in my opinion.

The fans haven't forgotten it, when the board and owners seem to have.

Been a massive part when you look at us between leeds bunley leicester luton southampton shef united. Is just a huge gap. Esp when was a clear gap between us and the board no conection with the fan base. Had the whole 1878 stuff, coach welcomes, whole psr protest ect. Can get angry here sometimes with the players but the support they get most of the time from the fans is amazing think shocks alot of players when do cone here how much support is here. Like silva coments the other day anout us being a big club

Part of it is also surely us not having known anything but the top flight. 70 years since we've been in the second division.

For fans of other clubs (Leicester as an example) they have been up and down over the years and decades. Relegation is something that happens.
Most Everton fans have never known it, so we fight like hell to keep it that way.

I'm old enough to know that every club bar Everton and Arsenal have been relegated from the top flight ( not just PL ). Vividly remember the likes of Spurs Chelsea & Man U going down . Even our charmless neighbours spent 8 seasons in the old Second Division 1953/54 - 61/62 but they don't talk about that.
We are rightly proud of our tenure. I would have been devastated if we'd gone down .

….we were last relegated in 51-52 but came back in 53-54, fortunately I can say we’ve been top flight for all my 68 years. It’s some achievement given the turmoil of recent times.

I ‘think’ Arsenal hold the record for continuous top flight years whilst we’ve spent longer in the top flight than any other club. I’ll add Forest, Villa and Man City to your list of clubs who’ve been in lower leagues in the not too distant past, Forest and Villa being former European Cup winners.

Yes - Arsenal have been in the top flight for a greater consecutive number of years, but their 'promotion' was quite dodgy by all accounts.

Indeed it was . In 1919, six years after Arsenal had moved to Highbury in North London, The Football League rather controversially voted to promote The Arsenal, instead of relegated local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, into the newly enlarged First Division, despite the team only finishing fifth in the Second Division’s last pre-war season of 1914–15. The owner Sir Henry Norris arranged the promotion.

It is, but if the gulf grows and we have three seasons in a row of all promoted teams getting relegated that excitement may start to dilute
Particularly of American owners get to the magic ownership number of 14 or 15 I think it is and then they may simply vote to shut up shop from relegation in the PL or at least reduce relegation numbers.

….the Championship is far more interesting this season, be it promotion, play-off and relegation fights. Big games again tonight, terrific end to the season.
Is it tho the top 3 all clubs relegated from the prem the last 2 seasons. Is gettint luke the prem teams will go up and doen and just swap places

think be lucky if one stays up each season now but does look like teams pulling away. Will be interesting to see what the new psr rules will do
