VAR

VAR has been destroyed by dozens of neutral commentators / journalists / ex-players over the weekend. Usually you'd think that ought to lead to some kind of change, but well... it was against Manchester United, so I fully expect them to double down on their "it ensured the correct decision was made" analysis. An absolutely abysmal performance by a referee meant to officiate the game fairly.

Last year we had Ashley Young sent off against Liverpool for two innocuous fouls, yet their centre half Konate, already on a yellow card, was allowed to take out DCL (I think) as the last line of defence and not only wasn't sent off, but was completely let off by the referee. So bad was the decision that he was immediately substituted by Klopp.

This season Liverpool continued their consistent fouling, safe in the knowledge that they'd be allowed to do so without punishment. That continued with Manchester United, God only knows how Maguire and Ugarte escaped the game without bookings, while we were on the receiving end of three -

The bias is so obvious and they no longer even try to hide it, especially when it's against little old Everton. I long for the day when we also are treated with ultimate leniency by the officials.

Chris Sutton says it’s not a pen and it was the correct use of VAR…

This should be enough for everyone to conclude it was a pen as everyone can universally agree that Sutton chats absolute turd
Well, he must be feeling like a right turd today because all the other pundits said clear penalty.

Even yesterday with the Liverpool goal that was ruled out, on the first still the commentator says "definitely onside" and am thinking is this man blind?

There’s a lot I don’t understand about VAR and how it’s being used. One of the weirdest parts for me is how we’re not able to hear the audio live but the commentary team are?
This works really well with the rugby. The difference seems to be that in the rugby there`s a team of officials working together to come up with the right decisions, led by the referee who makes the final call, whereas in our game we have a referee who has 2 assistant referees who seem to not help the referee when there are fouls committed right in front of them, and a couple of guys in a room watching tv that every so often get in the refs ear and hold the game up for 3 or 4 minutes looking for an offside of foul that never happened and then go back to sleep.

It depends what you mean by 'works really well' in rugby I suppose. It's an accepted part of the game so it works well in that sense, but whether it leads to better decisions and whether hearing the referees actually adds anything to the experience I don't know. Part of the issue is what you come to later - there are loads of 3-4 minute delays in rugby because it's a stop start game and nobody really cares that they're taking their time with a decision because nothing else would be happening anyway. In football it's different, the whole appeal of the game is how fast it is and taking an age to reach decisions when the crowd want to see the ball in play is one of the things people hate most about it.

I think var should have a clock with a set time limit. If you can't make a firm case to overturn the decision in that allotted time , it should be dropped , as it wasn't an obvious error. Tired of these 10 minute var calls trying to the miniscule aspect to justify var
Love the idea, but can you imagine the proper fume when a team has a normal looking goal overruled in less than 10 sec with no explanation other than "vibes"?

Then again, this just lowers the limit from 10 min to 10 sec for the same decision.... hmmm... maybe we should have a guy on the pitch making them on the spot, it should be quicker, I think that could work? Wait...
